I did a Zone 1 ride on Sunday on my mountain bike with my 4 year old son in tow on a "Trail-a-bike." He can ride a two wheeler, which I do a lot with him, but of course, there's no real work out available in that, so I was interested to see the possible work out with him on the TAB.

It was really great, and if you can do it, I highly suggest it. Having the resistance behind was helpful not only for the weight, but I found it very useful in feeling the different zones. It seemed I could really tell if I was engaging slow twitch or fast twitch muscles.

We did about a 50 minute ride, with most of it having my son laughing like crazy and yelling out "faster, daddy, faster!" He's a tough task master.

I just thought it was an interesting way to get a new work out in while spending time with the family a bit.

It sounds like you don't need to hire a trainer/coach. :D

Other than short rides with my wife, I've only taken my daughter out twice. Both times she fell asleep after about an hour.

My main complaint is that she's always talking, and I have to turn my head sideways for a chance to hear what she's saying.

Sound like fun. I'm jealous :)

But not having kids, I've considered hanging a weight plate from the top tube of my bike to make it heavier. That way I'd simulate having a heavier bike to train on and build muscle and on race day it'd be the same bike but 10lbs lighter.

Good idea? Dumb idea?

as much as having a kid is like having a plate hanging from your top tube sometimes, i still prefer the kids :)

adding weight? good idea, sure
hanging a plate? not so good (safety?)
maybe ankle weights or a belt or panniers or a trailer with someone/thing in it or ride a heavy mountain bike

Going for a ride on a heavier mountain bike with some knobby dirt tires will give you quite the workout:D
