HONOLULU, Hawaii (April 16, 2005) � U.S. elite triathlon Hunter Kemper had the fastest run of the day, but it wasn�t enough to defeat Great Britain�s Tim Don on Saturday at the JAL Honolulu Triathlon, part of the International Triathlon Union�s World Cup series.

After a dramatic sprint finish, Don won the men�s race in 1 hour, 54 minutes, 23 seconds. Kemper (Longwood, Fla.) was second in 1:54:24 and Courtney Atkinson of Australia was third in 1:54:32.

�I didn�t have enough left for the sprint,� Kemper said. �I�m a little disappointed after finishing second last year (to Canada�s Simon Whitfield). I hoped to win it. But it was my first race of the year, so I can�t be too upset.�

The Australians swept the women�s race, with Emma Snowsill winning in 2:04:39. Olympic silver medalist Loretta Harrop, who took a big swim lead and rode the entire bike course by herself in front, was second in 2:06:36. Annabel Luxford was third in 2:06:38.

U.S. elite triathlete Barb Lindquist (Alta, Wyo.), who won last year�s Honolulu Triathlon and qualified for the Olympic Team in the process, was the top U.S. women�s finisher in sixth. She out-sprinted Olympic bronze medalist Susan Williams (Denver, Colo.), who finished seventh.

In the men�s race, U.S. elite Andy Potts (Princeton, N.J.) led a large group of men out of the swim and onto the bike. On the first lap of the hilly bike course, France�s Stephane Poulat broke away. He was eventually joined by U.S. elite Seth Wealing (Fowler, Ind.).

However their lead wasn�t enough to keep away the strong runners in the large chase pack. Wealing went on to finish eighth. The other U.S. men in the top 10 were Matt Reed (Boulder, Colo.) in fifth, Victor Plata (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) in sixth and Potts in 10th.

The event featured an $80,000 prize purse, with $8,000 each going to the men and women�s winners.
