July 31, 2008 – (Philadelphia, PA) – Women of all ages and from across the country will swim, bike and run their way through Fairmount Park this weekend as the city welcomes back the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon – the all-women’s triathlon created to inspire and motivate participants, volunteers and spectators. In just its second year, SheROX Philadelphia has sold out with 1,500 women registered making this one of the largest all-women’s races on the East coast.
Taking place Sunday, August 3, the event will host professional triathletes, competitive amateurs and eager first-timers competing in a sprint distance triathlon which includes a .8K (.5 mile) swim, 25K (15.5 mile) bike, 5K (3.1 mile) run.
The pro field includes Rebeccah Wassner (winner of the 2007 and 2008 Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon women’s race), Laurel Wassner, Heather Leggi (2007 SheROX runner-up), and local pros Laurie Hug and Katie Dickerson. SheROX Philadelphia is one of the only all-women’s races in the U.S. to offer a prize purse with $4,750 to be split between the elite and amateur fields.
“We are thrilled to host the second annual SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon this weekend in Fairmount Park,” said Barb McKeever, Race Director, SheROX Triathlon Series. “After our successful debut last year, it became clear that there was a growing demand for a women’s triathlon series focused on the experience and the accomplishment. SheROX Philadelphia is now one of the largest all-women’s races on the East coast and we are pleased that so many women from across the country want to be part of this motivating and truly inspiring event.”
Founded in 2007, the SheROX Triathlon Series was launched with the inaugural SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon. In 2008, the series expanded nationally with SheROX sprint triathlons in Tempe, AZ, Philadelphia and Charlotte, NC. Produced by the organizers of the popular Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon, each event in the SheROX Triathlon Series is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and designed to ensure that every participant feels a sense of personal satisfaction, accomplishment and empowerment.
The women’s market is the fastest growing segment in the sport of triathlon. According to USA Triathlon, USAT female membership has increased from 11 percent in the early 90s, to 37 percent today. The popularity of the SheROX Series mirrors national trends. SheROX Philly participants have doubled from 700 last year to 1,500 registered for 2008.
The signature element of each SheROX Triathlon is its focus on cultivating a passion in women for the multi-sport lifestyle through the exclusive SheROX Mentor Program.
The complimentary SheROX Mentor Program pairs participants with an experienced and enthusiastic female triathlete who is passionate about the sport. Mentors provide information and support to help women feel comfortable about what to expect during training and on race day. Mentors are available via e-mail and proactively send regular tips and suggestions to address individual needs and concerns.
“The SheROX Mentor Program is what really sets us apart from other women triathlon series,” added McKeever. “The SheROX Philly Tri will be the first triathlon for more than half of the women registered this year. The goal with the Mentor Program is to ensure that these first-timers, and all of our participants, have a positive event experience from the time they started training until they cross the finish line on Sunday. Our mentors have done a terrific job of introducing these women to the multi-sport lifestyle.”
The SheROX Series has also partnered with Active.com to provide free training plans for every woman who registers for the race. Using the Active.com Active Trainer program, athletes of all skill levels receive access to professional training through this web-based tool.
For the second year, the official charity of the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon is the Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. TROCRF was organized exclusively for charitable & scientific purposes, with the goal of raising funds to advance ovarian cancer research towards a cure, advocating for early diagnostic treatment programs and to improve the lives of ovarian cancer survivors. Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death of all gynecologic cancers in the United States. For more information, please visit www.trocrf.org
The SheROX Health and Fitness Expo will be held at Lloyd Hall (1 Boathouse Row on Kelly Drive) on Saturday, August 2 from 9am-5pm and is open to the public.
