Ironman and Olympic Hopefuls Set to Race at Subaru Shawnigan Lake Triathlon

Athletes representing 6 countries and 7 provinces are set to race in the Subaru Shawnigan Lake International Triathlon this weekend just outside of Victoria, Canada. The race will start with the blast of a Howitzer cannon for the Half Ironman distance race (1.9k swim, 90k bike, and 21k run) with a shorter sprint race starting soon after. This event will serve as the Subaru West Coast Triathlon Series Men’s Championship and has attract professional triathletes Jasper Blake (2006 Ironman Canada Champion), Ukrainian Andriy Yastrebov (2007 Subaru Vancouver Half Iron Champion), Canadian Chris Brown (3rd at 2007 Ironman Canada), and American Jordon Rapp (3rd at 2008 Ironman Arizona).
The race will also feature many Olympic Hopefuls using the race as a tune-up for the ITU World Championships in Vancouver including Canadians Brent McMahon, Kirsten Sweetland, Paul Tichelaar, Kyle Jones, and Dutch National Team Member Lisa Mensink.

The Subaru West Coast Triathlon Series features four exciting events hosted in beautiful locations across Canada’s west coast. Athletes of all abilities, from first-timers to the top elite athletes, will participate in different distances including Half Iron, Sprint, and Relay. The events will have a festival feel and include an expo, kid’s fun run, entertainment, and clinics hosted by top international coaches and athletes. The Series is managed by LifeSport, a company founded by Olympic Gold Medal and Ironman Champion Coaches Lance Watson and Paul Regensburg. LifeSport is the “Official Coaches of Ironman Worldwide”.
The Subaru West Coast Triathlon Series will kick off with Canada’s only May long distance triathlon in picturesque Shawnigan Lake featuring the Trans Canada trails. Next up will be the perennial sell-out New Balance Half Iron held on the edge of beautiful Victoria at scenic Elk Lake. In July, Vancouver will play host the third stop on the Series in the magnificent setting of the Spanish Banks beaches framed by the backdrop of the city skyline and panoramic North Shore Mountains.
