MIRINDA CARFRAE WINS INAUGURAL AFLAC IRON GIRL LAKE LAS VEGAS TRIATHLON

Iron Girl Participants to Be Featured in NBC Broadcast on July 26, 2008

(April 12, 2008) - Today, Mirinda Carfrae and Jeanne Fleck claimed the first place International and Sprint distance titles respectively at the inaugural Aflac Iron Girl Lake Las Vegas Triathlon in Las Vegas, NV.

“I didn't come here thinking or worrying about winning. I came here to push myself from start to finish,” said Mirinda Carfrae, winner of the 2008 Aflac Iron Girl Lake Las Vegas Triathlon – International Distance. “It's great to go out without any pressure and really race for yourself. Congratulations to everyone who participated, as there are a lot of easier races they could have done. It was a hard course, but a lot of fun!”

The sold-out event, consisting of an International distance (1,500M Swim / 40K Bike / 10K Run) and a Sprint distance (600M Swim / 20K Bike / 5K Run), took place at Loews Hotel and Lake Las Vegas Resort, with nearly 700 women participating. The event brought together a diverse group of women ranging in age and fitness level, from professional to beginner.

Carfrae lead a field of professional athletes including the 2006 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Samantha McGlone, short-course specialist, Becky Lavelle and Ironman World Champion, Karen Smyers, who were competing for a $15,000 prize purse. The final results are below:

Today's race consisted of participants from 34 states including: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, New York, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming. There were also athletes who traveled from Canada, Australia and New Zealand to participate.

There were several inspiring age group women who stood out in the crowd, including:
• Laurel Wassner, 33, Hoboken, NJ - After surviving Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 23, Laurel became the first cancer survivor in the United States to earn a professional triathlon license.
• Becky Lamph, 40, Las Vegas, NV - Becky, a thyroid cancer survivor and the mother of an Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia survivor, participated in the International distance event.
• Beth Wonicker-Cook, 41, Palm Harbor, FL - Growing up Beth suffered from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) where she could not bend down or squat, much less run. As she got older, the JRA went into remission and she began running and participating in triathlons. This past February she accomplished her goal of completing the Boston Marathon. Ten days later she learned of her diagnosis with cervical cancer. She is currently undergoing radiation treatment and continuing to lead an active lifestyle.
• Lisa Jamison, 45, Tampa, FL – Lisa is a survivor of bulimia. She raced the Aflac Iron Girl Lake Las Vegas Triathlon to promote awareness and raise funds for her brother-in-law who is battling melanoma. Lisa started a program called, I've Got Your Back, for massage therapists, coaches, and trainers to educate and stress early detection of skin cancer. In addition, she has a fundraising goal of $50,000 for the Melanoma International Foundation.

The Aflac Iron Girl Lake Las Vegas Triathlon is the first all-women's triathlon to be nationally televised on NBC Networks. The event will air on July 26, 2008, from 3:30 -4:30 p.m. EST. The telecast will showcase a highly competitive professional field, as well as stories of inspirational age-group females. The telecast will focus on the International distance course, with highlights from the sprint race.

New title sponsor, Aflac, continues to provide additional amenities and support for the events. Participants were offered first aid and skin cancer awareness kits with sunscreen and Aflac branded sponges at each of the refueling stations, in addition to wellness brochures specific to women. Aflac also awarded each finisher with a commemorative Aflac Iron Girl plush duck, similar to the one made famous in its national advertising campaign.

Unique to the 2008 series is the “Aflac Iron Girl Retreat to Hawaii,” promotion. Iron Girl's charitable partner, the Ulman Cancer Fund, was on-site today offering information on racing to benefit young adults living with and recovering from cancer.
