Inaugural Subaru Sooke International Triathlon Set to Go this Weekend

Long Distance Champion Confirms Entry

The athletes have arrived for the Subaru Sooke International Half Iron & Sprint Triathlon taking place July 22. This race event marks the second stop of the Subaru West Coast Triathlon Series in the beautiful oceanside community of Sooke just outside Victoria, BC.

The howitzer cannon will blast Sunday morning to start the race that includes many amateur athletes side by side a strong professional field, particularly in the women’s race. Lucy Smith of Victoria, who is fresh off of being crowned the Canadian Long Distance Triathlon Champion, will battle Louisa Edmonston (Scotland) whose racing resume includes a 3rd place Ironman Finish, and local athlete Charlene Waldner who finished 4th at last year’s Ironman Canada. The start list also includes Cheryl Murphy, a National Duathlon Champion, and Elite Ironman Athlete.

The shorter sprint and relay races include many top Canadian athletes including Andre-Paul Baillargeon-Smith (St Catherine’s, ON) - 3rd place Bridgeport Pan American Cup, Daniel Wells, (Holland Landing, ON) – Former Junior National Champion, Kerry Spearing (Victoria, BC) – Former Junior National Champion, Alexandra Coates (Calgary, AB) - 2nd place 2007 Pan American Junior Championships, Janet Nielsen (Victoria, BC) - Under 23 Canadian National Team Member, and John Wallace (Victoria, BC) - 2-Time Olympic gold medallist in Men’s Rowing.

The event will utilize Young Lake at Scout Camp Barnard, Downtown Sooke, local and urban roadways, and a run course out to the beautiful Whiffen Spit. Additional information and live updates of the race will be available at www.lifesport.ca
