I am experiencing a shin splint like nagging pain, but it is in a location that I have never had shin splints before.
if you put your finger on the top of your achilles tendon (middle of back of leg) and move about 1-1.5 inches toward the outside of your leg.... that is where the pain is.
It does not hurt so much when I am in normal walking activity, but anything strenuous (running, playing tennis, etc.) causes that nagging "shinsplintesque" pain.
Anyone ever expereinced this?
Thanks

Odds are it is shin splints. It is possible to get shin splints on the side of the calf. The cause is different but the feeling is the same.
Quick lesson on shin splints. Although thought to be bone, the pain is muscular. Shin splints in the front are usually a result of flat feet or excessive overpronation. Side shin splints are usually the cause of overuse.
Either way the best way to get rid of them is rest, ice and stretch. Being that your discomfort is on the side I would really focus on the stretch.
How to stretch the calf:
1. Lean towards a wall with one leg forward and the knee bent, supporting yourself with your arms.
2. Keep the rear leg straight, heel on the floor.
3. Keep your back straight and lean your hips forward until you feel a stretch in your calf.
4. To stretch the soleus muscle (the muscle on the side of your calf, both inside and outside) and Achilles, do the same calf stretch but bend the back knee slightly and you will feel the pull on your Achilles tendon.
I hope this helps

thanks very much for the advice...
I had no idea shink splints could be on the side as well...
I will definately start stretching more and hopefully this will go away so I can start training again!
Take Care
