i have not attempted a tri before, a buddy of mine convinced me to give one a go in June then after reading some information and training info backed out. i believe i have until june 14th. i am a avid runner all though im just getting tuned back up after about a six month lay out and im a avid mtn biker but the swimming will be tough. of course ive never done all three in one race. any advice will be appreciated.

also all i have is a rigid frame mtn bike and with my wife due with our first child at the end of June i have no cash for a new bike. is it possible to convert a mtn bike to a race worthy machine? any ideas?

looking forward to any response or help you can give me.

hey shawn,

welcome to the site and the sport of triathlon. start with reading some of the articles in the following section:

As well, look into getting a book to start you out. The Triathlete's Training Bible and Workouts for Working People are popular among members of the site.

On the bike issue, no problem starting out on a mountain bike, many of us started out the same way. Try getting some clip on aerobars and slicks for your wheels. Give that a try on a race or 2 before throwing down for a new bike.

congrats on the new addition on the way and good luck with your training and racing. keep us posted.
