Ok, I've upped my running mileage for winter marathons and have developed a slight pain in my ankle. It feels like the soft tissue (tendons and/or muscles) on the outside of my lower ankle, right around and below the big ol' bone on the outside. It feels like a mild ankle sprain. It doesn't hurt on impact while running, but it gets sore from all the flexing while pushing off. On a scale of 1 - 10 (one being no pain, 10 being a broken ankle), it is a 3. I've been treaing with the R.I.C.E. method.

Does anyone know what this is? Have you had this before? If so, how long does it last?

The first step is to see your orthopedist. I had a similar injury last year. Once you know exactly what you are working with (instead of guessing), you will either need to rest it and / or perform some rehab exercises. Most likely it will get better with rest and time off. This is one of the more difficult things to do, but your first priority needs to be letting your injury heal.
