It was a beautiful day yesterday, so I took an extra loop on bike ride home, heading into the sun, and wind, and pushing pretty hard, huffing a bit. Before I could react, right on a huge inhale, a good sized fly made it’s way into my mouth, and so far as I could tell I inhaled it. Not swallowed (which I’d prefer, despite that being kind of gross), but inhaled into my lungs. I coughed and spasmed (didn’t really feel it come out – not sure it went in), spit, etc. In the end I didn’t feel any worse for the wear, so I continued. I feel some pain in my chest today, but I think it was just my hard workout, not a bug in my lungs.

The question is: is it even possible to inhale an insect that’s not smaller than 2mm or something (I’m guessing this one was at least 3-4mm long)? If it is possible, or even for the smaller ones, is it a problem … would there be anyway to extract it, if I needed too?

I’ve inhaled plenty of bugs and I’m still alive, sure you’ll be fine.

Like other pollutants that you inhale your body will eventually process it and expel it from your body.

    Hope it wasn’t a West Nile-carryin’ ‘skeeter.

    I thought this might help:
There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.
I dunno why she swallowed that fly,
    Perhaps she’ll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
    Perhaps she’ll die.

    There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd, to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
    Perhaps she’ll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat.
Imagine that, she swallowed a cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird …
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
    Perhaps she’ll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a dog.
What a hog! To swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat…
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird …
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
    Perhaps she’ll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a goat.
Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog …
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird …
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
    Perhaps she’ll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow.
I don’t know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat… She swallowed the goat to catch the dog…

There was an old lady who swallowed a horse -
    She’s dead, of course.

    Best of luck

I guess I would stop at the fly before it escalates ;-)

I would think of it this way:
When you accidently inhale water or start to choke on food (goes down the wrong pipe) you cough until it comes up. I highly doubt a bug actually made it into your lungs, you probably hacked it out.

wait wait wait… why did she swallow a goat to catch the dog? That makes no sense at all…

I’ve had a few whack against the back of my throat and just gulped ‘em down.

Your lungs are dense, I don’t think anything can actually get *in* there. Like any larger particle, it’d just come out with the mucus anyway.
