The event was on the other end of town so at 4AM when I left there was a raging thunderstorm over most of the Phoenix area. Unless you live here, you have to understand we get like 3-4 good storms a year, and the chances of this happening the morning of the event i've been getting ready for was very slim, but everything turned out okay.

The lighting stopped and then the rain stopped about 30 minutes before the event started, so we got to swim. I had done duathlons before but I had been working on my swimming for the last few months so I was eager to get out there and try it.I had never done any open water swimming before this. It was supposed to be a 750m swim but one of the race offcials told us the storm had blown the bouys further out so it was at least 750m

When the swim started, I ran and jumped in the water, swimming faster than I usually do and my breathing wasn't feeling right, so I tried to slow my breathing down so I could control it. About 100meters into the swim I got a little panic feeling, thinking "what am I doing out here.. why did I do this" but i kept it together i got myself relaxed, got my rythm and breathing back in control and had a good swim.

The run up the boat ramp was pretty slippery (check the photo gallery) but I had a pretty good transition (practiced for this) and had an awesome ride. I really felt great throughout the entire ride.

The run was okay, it was along the same road I had to ride out of the transition area and it was a pretty nasty hill. The run was fine, I felt in control and finished up strong.

There weren't any champ chips at this race so the results could take a while.

All in all, it was a great first event, everything went as planned, and I can't wait for the next one

Nice job Ted, who did you con to go with you that early to take pictures? My friends are too lazy, you must have a good friend there. A good support crew is hard to find. You gotta take care of those people when you find them!

Nice job ted. Way to go. Looks like it was a bit chilly. Wicked cycling tan alright. Need to spend more time at the pool to combat that. :) No worries though, I usually sport the wicked tan lines as well.

nice picks, seems like you were well prepared for your first tri.... enjoyed the pics, the tri area seemed like it was a good place for a race.

Yeah the only thing I wasn't ready for was the HUGE boat ramp.

http://unixfoo.net/gallery/tri/IMG_1284.JPG

The water levels at lake pleasant are about 60% of what they should be and we were at the very end of the ramp. But right out of the water there was about a 400m run to the transition area on top of the wet, slippery, rocky ramp.

The bike leg was great, most of the people on their aero bikes had problems with the hills. I would generally catch people with aero bikes going uphill, but they would fly past me on the downhill.

Thanks for all the replies and comments :)

ah, i agree with the aero bar thing, i recently bought a tri bike and i have noticed its abit annoying having the shifters on the bars on a very hilly course.... although i chalk it mostly up to lack of experience on my part (or weak legs)....

A lot of people with aero bars look like they just slapped some clip-ons their bike the night before and went with it.

They were working a lot harder on the ride than they should have been.
