Is $97 Total ($10 Late & $7 adminis.) above the norm for an Olympic Tri.? This references Lake Canandaigua, Ny, to be held 19 Sept.'04. My first Olympic was only $25, held 11 Sept.'04 at Ford City, Pa(Crooked Creek Triathlon). Although the swim got cancelled, and it became a 2.1 mile run, 20 mile bike, 5 mile run.

I agree that entry fees are outrageous. That does seem a bit on the high side. Usually its more around $75.

I just spent $425 plus some really big service fee to sign up for IM WI. Now that really hurts!

i agree.....im findign i cant enter any of the bigger events as i dont have enough money n end up spending any prize money on entering my next event.....why is it so expensive anyway?? i dont spend anywhere near as much on swimming , orienteering or just running comps or entering cycling races.....tsssk, so i often find i cant enter as many races as i want....the bala olympic tri recently cost £84!!!!! so theres no way i could enter as my parents wont pay

So it was an $80 race...a bit high, but not outrageous. However, do keep in mind the costs of putting on a triathlon...rental/closure fees on often 3 different courses, safety/medical support, timing, officials, aid stations, etc. Charity tris will also cost more...

The bigger the race, expect to pay more. If the race fills, why charge less?

I have completed 2 Olympics races, and I paid $50 for both during early registration. The most I have paid for a race was $110 and that was for 1/2 IM. $97 for a Olympic race is a bit steep, they better have beer for all the triathletes, gels at the water points, and some kick ass t-shirts/goodie bag. :p

Having ventured into the race management side of Triathlons, there seems to be more and more costs being assigned to the sport. Just a short list that has to be paid for are 1) The race manager (It's his job and he gets's paid for it) 2) the location (Park rental is going up for events contantly) 3) Bribes um I mean police presence for traffic control etc 4) Dedicated EMS onsite, 5) Equipment rental (Barriers, Genereators, banners, flags, PA systems, bike racks aren't cheap), 6) Awards 7) Insurance, on top of the $9 USAT Individual athlete coverage. 8) Charity (Why else would you be racing for) 9) Prize money (If given)

I could go on forever, but it takes a lot of time and effort from multiple people to get an event organized and run smoothly and that cost is constantly going up due to that lovely word called inflation and in some cases greed by external entities that provide the services to the race.

Next time you race in a Tri, look around and really see what the Race Director/Organizer has done to bring you a managed event, and if you can find him and thank him for all the effort (He's usually the one with the largest black rings under his eyes.). If you can't do that send him an email, because if you are reading this, you already are computer savy.

As for the race cost, the more prestigious and exotic the location, you can be sure the cost is going to be higher.

Hope all have had a great season. :)

RE: Excessive Race fees.....

As someone has mentioned, the cost of putting on a race can become high. There are many things that athletes don't realize have a cost attached...port-a-potties, announcers, Ontario Association of Triathletes officials (similiar to USAT I believe) and the list can go on and on upwards of $35,000 for ONE RACE.

If you are looking for a way to lessen the price of you race season...VOLUNTEER! I can't speak for other RD's but for my race, if you volunteer your time by assisting with set up/take down, offering up a boat to put the swim bouys in etc. etc. I will enter you in the race FREE. Volunteers are very hard to find, especially ones that have an understanding of how the races flow.

Even I balk at some of the fees I pay but....it's worth it in the end.
Hopefully this will help you with costs and volunteering is fun. It's how I became an RD. :)

I wonder if anyone has charted the cost of entry fees over that last 10-15 years. It does seem that they have signifigantly increased from over 10 years ago.
