Flat Tires

Twice in the last 3 weeks i've gotten flat tires. Both times they occured in my garage a day or two after a ride. I have my half ironman this Sat, so i am concerned. I have checked the tire and could not find any glass or anything, but there does seem to be some small holes. Does this mean I need to replace the whole tire and not just the tube? I just hate messing w/ my bike so close to the race.

Did you happen to also check the inside of the tire when you were fixing the last flat? It is possible that glass or something has worked its way inside. Alternately, you say you have "holes" in the tire...could there be a bit of tire innards (kevlar bead or wire bead or something) that is poking into the tube? If you haven't yet, just run your hands along the inside to see if anything sharp is there. Be careful, though.

Also, take a look at your rim strip and make sure that it is covering the inside spoke holes well. I dont' think it's that common, but I've had a flat or two because of crappy rim strips not covering the holes real well.

Also, do you happen to patch or do you replace the tubes? I've had decent luck on Mtn bike tubes patching them, but personally change my road tubes everytime I flat. I just don't trust patches with the higher pressure.

Anyway, good luck tracking that down!

I decided to just change my tires. Both the front and back were starting to look pretty worn. How many miles should they typically last? I suspect I could have gotten a little more wear out of them, but I just don't want to take any chances w/ my race so soon. I dropped my bike off at the shop and I'm letting t hem take care of it for me. I know I couild do it myself, but just dont want to risk screwing something up.
