sprint tri #2... done! but it wasn't very pretty. the swim was in the boston harbor, where the water is gross and chilly (62-65 F). the new thinskin longsleeve top i bought the other day worked fabulously... good mobility and warmth. but man was it still a shock to jump into the water at 7am! took my breath away. the currents were a little troublesome, but not too bad, no big waves or whitecaps. and we swam around the world trade center, which made for an easy course to follow. i think i did well though, around 15 min. according to my watch.

next to the bike rack, good T1 and out on the road. the streets of boston are not the best, bumpy and full of potholes, but that was expected. we rode along the river, which was great going out, terrible coming back. the wind (i think the forecast said 15-20 mph?) was directly in my face, and my speed evaporated. my legs were unhappy with me by the end of it, but my friend never caught me (he started 5 min after me), so i was happy.

the run. well to say the least it was HORRIBLE. i completely bonked. even though i was drinking gatorade at both transitions, and water. and i had a good breakfast and dinner the night before. legs were shaky and miserable, got a big ol' side stich soon after the start which lasted for the entire freakin race. so i walked rather frequently. at least 5 times. but i didn't let that get me down (although i HATE to walk) becauase my body was just struggling to finish. i was in the first wave, so i was group C... D was after that, etc. and i saw every single letter in the alphabet pass me on the run. i mean, all the way to J. it was so awful it was amusing, really. i must have looked pretty pitiful, cause people voiced their concern and encouragement. which i appreciated greatly. i think that 3.1 mi took me 37 min. yikes. oh well. overall time was 1:38 i think, which is better than my last race, so i'm happy.

moral of this story: racing with little to no training for 2-3 weeks is BAD. your body will hate you. live and learn. but the race was a lot of fun, i did it with 3 friends (who all beat me :p ) and it was well organized and executed. happy labor day weekend everyone!

Sounds a lot like the race I did today! Frigging 30 mile an hour headwinds, uphill, on the bike leg. I thought "Cool, tailwind on the way back..." but no, it died right about as I was turning around, and stayed gone until I hit T2, when WHACK! it hit me in the face again and was a nasty crosswind with a headwind component ALL through the run! Plus I about froze... when the water is warmer than the air, you know that's bad...

Oh well, on to next season.

way to go! what a cool accomplishment with all the extra-fun added in. ;) headwinds can be tough, it's like adding more miles to your race than you anticipated (especially if it's a headwind both ways.)

sounds like you learned a lot on this race! more ammo for the next one.

happy training!
