braving the cold without a wetsuit
That temperature is doable, but not for extended periods. I'd consider using some petroleum jelly or something as a second skin. Not that I've tried it, but I know it's used for long distance swims (the English Channel crossing as an example).
TDB- is 15 min considered an extended period of time? it's only 1/2 mi swim. and isn't it kinda gross to bike and run with petroleum all over you? or do you wipe it off in T1?
this is probably why i never tried it :D i mistakenly thought you were doing just a swim. but it is worth considering...
I did a tri in the spring where the water was about that cold. It was my first tri, so I really didn't know about wet suits....neither did most of the other first timers.
To be honest, I really didn't notice the water temp, but will admit it seemed like I was out of breath a little more than my other tri's. I don't think I would warm up in the water either, most of the people that I seen warm up were freezing before the start.
I heard some people talk of putting baby oil on the body for a base layer????? I do this on my legs when it's not cold enough for leg warmers, and it really does the trick...really.
Half mile, you will be fine.
thanks guys! i decided to go out and buy a thinskin long sleeve top anyway... it's a little thicker than a rashguard, but still allows for good movement. i think it's 1mm neoprene with .5mm around the shoulders. and i most definately will not warm up in the water... i want to be in and out of that dirty harbor asap! thanks for the advice though... i think my friend may try the baby oil.... i'll let you all know how it goes. should be interesting since i have not swam, biked or ran for the last 2 weeks! a trip to vegas i guess was not the best thing to schedule right before my race... oh well! i'm looking at it as a test of my TRUE athletic ability :) enjoy the long weekend!

this forum may be over but if i were you then i wudnt srape of the petrolium - there should be loads of you so it wont matte wat you look like; though you might want to quickly dry your hands on your race towels

this weekend i'm doing the monster challenge in boston, which means that i'll be swimming in the harbor. (love that dirty water..) the temp is supposed to be 65-68 (F) i think and i really do not have the funds for a wetsuit right now. and i figure that i can survive a 15 min swim in those temps... (right??). but i was wondering if anyone has used a rashguard (like a surf shirt) during the swim and if it'll help keep me a little warmer? any thoughts?
