Ultra running

I am interested in getting into some longer running, and am looking for some advice from you Ultra pros. Any advice on what distance to start at, or books that may be helpful for a training plan?

A little background: I've done 5 half-marathons, 6 HIMs and 2 IMs in the last three years. I really have no interest in doing a 26.2 marathon...I know, don't ask  But would rather move up to ultra.

I may have the opportunity to do a 50K run in October (if its still open), and am wondering is that is good timing (since I just finished IMA) or if that's too soon after...any thoughts?

Any advice or suggestions would be great....and I appreciate it! -Andrea

New skin worked great! was out for 4 hours on Sunday in 90 degree heat and was just a sweaty mess with soaking wet shoes...not a bubble.
40 three or four weeks out would be good, but not necessary...as long as you'll have time to get in at least a 50k. Even two back to back long runs would do the trick in the same time frame...
Getting excited?

YEAH! I'm SO glad the New Skin worked for you! Did you try it with the powder too? Did you reapply during the run at all?

I, on the other hand, got a blister on my little toe yesterday, following a 4.5 hour run on Sunday. I think it was more of a shoe issue than anything. Grrrr....I need to find the right shoes ASAP!

I am getting excited about Vermont...I know I can do the distance, its the HILLS up there I'm getting freaked out about. I am a flatlander, afterall. I think I have the opportunity to do a 40-miler in two weeks with my group. And that will be IT....I'm getting tired :)

It's simple Star. The guiding rule of Ultras (especially for us normal folks. Walk the up hills, run the down hills and flats. You see people running up them all the time but later in the race they start running backwards and you'll pass them by. It's all about saving gas and getting to the finish. In a number of out and back ultras I've seen the eventual winners walking up hills...it really is ok...so don't let them worry you. To help make sure you do ok...take some up tempo walks to get used to walking fast.

Yeah, from what I understand, this course will determine when I walk and when I run. And believe me, I have NO intention of running hills...I may just be *crawling* up them by the end :)

And I guess I meant to ask you...before (when I was training for the 50M) you'd recommended running the distance over two days, and I got close to 50 miles one weekend. Do you think the same rule applies for the 100K? So IF I run the 40-miler (in one day) in a few weeks, should I turn around the next day and run X-number of miles, or...?

Per some of my Looooong distance friends , you don't have to, it just really helps with confidence and what not...40 one day and get out again the next day if only for a short one. Most people don't run any more in a 100 miler than they do in a 50, believe it or not...(there's a ton of walking at night) so really training for a 50 will see you through a 100k with no problem. Some folks like to tweek it a bit for themselves, but you don't have to.
It's really amazing and bit of a shocker for first time ultra runners on a hilly course to see so much walking. Walking, running, crawling, shuffling, staggering...it doesn't matter. Just finish within the time cut off.

I've been reading along with you guys (i think of this as "Star's thread"), and I'm in awe that you consider these distances for sport!

poorly written, for my part, but that's what i meant!

i'm working on a first time HIM this year and may consider a marathon later...but, at this point, I only read about ultras!

(small voice continues) ... not tempted YET, that is... it would be beautiful and quite amazing... and I hear people at ultras are often even friendlier than tri folks...

Thanks Anton. I think doing the 40-miler one day, and maybe a walk or VERY slow jog around the 'hood the next will be a solid confidence-builder for me.

As for you tri-ac and kylie...its just happens. Its funny, I was reading my blog from Jan '07 when I started training for IMA, and I mentioned doing an ultra when IM was over. So I signed up for a 50k and did it in October. Then I signed up for the 50-miler in April, and did it. And now its the 100K. It all depends on who you know...and I know a LOT of pushers :)

And I may not necessarily agree with Anton about the FUN part...I think this one's REALLY going to hurt. But I'm sure there'll be other sadists out there with whom to commiserate...

Oh I was just trying to get tri-ac to do one :) I really enjoyed mine, and loved the people I met in training for it. I have plans to do another once grad school allows for it, and the "get speedier" tri focus is not the #1 training goal.

i do have the baggage of a 3 yo right now, so I'm maxing my training time just to do the HIM and still be a good daddy. but never say "never"...

Good on you. Daddy first, athlete somewhere else down the line.
Your young and the best UR's don't hit their stride (pun intended) until the 40's.

I hope that doesn't mean that thirty-somethings don't make good ultrarunners. I am the youngster in my running group...by about ten years. I sure have lots of fun ribbing my elders in the trails though! heehee

Thirty somethings make great ultrarunners! Imagine, though, how much better you'll be with more experience and miles under your belt!
I've had it explained to me this way: Ultrarunning is very hard on the body. It takes years of adaptation to get used to it. Sure you see folks all the time who pop up, run the requisite big races and the the odd 100 miler...then you never see them again. They destroyed themselves in the process.
And here is the plus or you...Women tend to be better at ultras than men...not necessarily faster, although it's not uncommon to se women win or place highly at a UR, but women have more endurance capabilities than men. It has something to do with how we store fat differently.

Thank you Anton. I needed that today...because yesterday I had a crappy run! We planned on running 30 miles, and just over half-way through I had some physical problems that slowed me to a walk. I decided to bail on the 30 miles and avoid injury, and walked over four miles back to my car in the blistering heat. Talk about disappointing and frustrating. Days like that make me wonder why and do this and what I'm thinking trying to run 100k.

I hope that eventually my body will adapt to this crazy sport...because I really like it and the people. My feet and toes hurt the most and I need to find some good shoes ASAP! I know I need to just keep trying new ones til I find what works for me. And I guess its the challenge of figuring it out that I like so much.

If I look back, I just started "ultrarunning" in September. That's not much time is it? I still have a lot to learn. I'm going to continue to work at it though...because I KNOW I can do it.

You were smart to bail. I had one of those last week. You've got the miles in you to succeed now...three weeks away, right? Don't try and play catch up...just let it go and start pulling yourself together mentally..it will happen. I counsel patience. Remember, Star...walking at an Ultra is ok. I know folks who walk 100 milers and still finish well within the cut-off. I know it can be very frustrating. When it is, it's your body trying to tell you something...
I've always been happy running Ultras in cushy road shoes, even on trails. Try a cushioned sock like Thor-lo. Ininjis are great but maybe ya need a bit more cush. You'll be fine girl...it's only 100k!

Hey, wait a sec...Vermont is four weeks away...don't freak me out! We have one more long run left, then a nice taper. I'll finish that little run if I have to crawl.

I'm still working on the shoes...and I decided on road shoes as well (after my experience at Umstead). I need to get them soon to break 'em in.

Thank you as always for your support and wisdom :)

Because of my tweaked calf, I just ran 13 on Sunday and 11 on Monday. I'm gearing up for my last long run on Saturday (trying for 30...walking a lot, I imagine!). I tried new runners: Nike Pegasus and they felt pretty good. Not sure how they'll be after 60 miles, but...for now at last I have something a little more comfy. Thanks for asking. I'll let you know what happens this Saturday.
