Ultra running

I am interested in getting into some longer running, and am looking for some advice from you Ultra pros. Any advice on what distance to start at, or books that may be helpful for a training plan?

A little background: I've done 5 half-marathons, 6 HIMs and 2 IMs in the last three years. I really have no interest in doing a 26.2 marathon...I know, don't ask  But would rather move up to ultra.

I may have the opportunity to do a 50K run in October (if its still open), and am wondering is that is good timing (since I just finished IMA) or if that's too soon after...any thoughts?

Any advice or suggestions would be great....and I appreciate it! -Andrea

I think you checked last years results.
This year was;

972 Anton Struntz GAITHERSBURG MD 12:43:17 15:13
973 Scott Fleming MADISON NJ 12:43:17 15:13

I'm working on the race report.

Anton rolled his ankle a number of times while we were on the AT within the first 10 miles. I don't know how he walked, let alone run and finish. His ankle was the size of a grapefruit. It was painful to look at. I admire his intestinal fortitude. He seriously defined mental toughness on Saturday.

That and he was able to remain sane and retain his hearing after listening to me all that time. :D

We started together and we finished together. I really had a great time doing my first ultra.

Ok, I'm a dork! I looked and looked at the list and couldn't find any Beads listed! Hehee I guess I'm a little brain damaged from my own run yesterday.

Anyway, you guys ROCK! You are SO awesome! Scott, make sure you put out your report over the upcoming long weekend, so we have plenty of time to read it...I'm sure it's going to be a loooong one ;) CONGRATS again!!!

Hey Anton and Beads...how's the recovery going? Hope you're both feeling good by now. I was thinking, how about you give us the top three things you learned at the JFK 50-miler...? Care to share your insights...?

Hey guys...the ankle is better. The swelling has gone down enough to let get out of the Crocs and into running shoes.
JFK was my 18th official Ultra (plenty of 50k training runs that don't "count") was there stuff to learn? Sure. Always is.
Better yet, there are lessons to be re-learned.
1) Things change in an instant.
2) There is no bottom when you have to dig deep.
3) It's all in your head
I did learn one new thing. I've never run an ultra with someone before. This was new for me. So, my new lesson?

Well it will be camping with their RV, so it might be ok. Plus southern CA is a whole different kind of cold (although I should be careful what I say -- I've heard last year it was the coldest race!)

Folks who start in their 30's usually have longer careers than if they started when young...an "Indestructable" youth often leads to trashed knees and burnout before they hit the mid-20's. I've met hundreds of kids in the last 27 years that "used to run" or play soccer or swim club teams...they often are forced to quit in college due to injury or burnout...for every lad or lass that continues to be athletic into their 30's and beyond there are dozens that never make it past 25.

So, what are your ultra running goals for 2008? I'm going to run a 50-miler in April...its like 14 weeks away!!! When I look at the training plan (for the JFK...thank you Anton!), I get a little freaked out! Other than that, my buddies and I are still planning on the Wild West Relay in CO in August. What about you?

You're ready kylie...more than you realize. Best of luck.

My goals?
Greenway Trail 50k. My plan is to run it as 100k. Start at the finish and get to the start about start
time! March 1.
Lt. Stone 50k . March 22 On the road.
Virginia 24 Run for Cancer. April 12
24 Hour Virginia Adventure run. April 26
JFK 50 miler on November 22.
This is a big ultra year for me as I also want to do a Double IM in July and a Triple in October.
Beads and I keep thinking about setting up a Fat A$$ (A "Diet" for you AR types) IM...I may have to this year for training and to keep costs down.
I keep telling myself "One year, I'm going to do nothing but short races!"

A Fat A$$ is a tradition in Ultrarunning. There are probably more FA races around than regular ones...and in fact you can hold one yourself. Google Fat A$$ 50k (with real S's) and see how many hits you get.
It's an ultra, say 50k, no entry fee, you keep your own time and supply your own aid.
No t-shirt. No whinning. You can have a time cut off, or not. They go up to 100 + miles. The beauty of it? It counts in your race total..it's a race but purely outside the realm of organized racing. They often have pot luck after race feeds.
Beads and I have been kicking around the idea of doing one for an HIM or IM Or Ultra Duathlon.
Ya set a date. Tell folks where. That's it. Show up on race day and do your thing. Ya need at least two people or it's just a long training day.
And no, a Fat A$$ is not required....if that were the case I'd never be allowed!

I'm inviting you ultra runners to come down to the Keys in May! There is an inaugural 100-mile and 50-mile ultramarathon that runs the length of the Keys, called THE KEYS 100 (http://keys100.com/). The 100-miler starts at Key Largo and runs to Key West, and the 50-mile starts on Marathon Key and runs to Key West. I think I'm going to do it! Anyone care to join me????

Which FL race? The Croom 50-miler? Well, I'm still on the waiting list for the Umstead 100 (NC) for the 50-mile option in April. At this point, I need 20 people to drop out to get a slot. However, my running buddy asked me to "pace" her in the last 50 miles....she's going for the 100. I'd rather do 50 for myself, but pacing may be the only option to get into that particular race. From what the RD said though, I think I have a good chance of getting in ;)

Anyway, GOOD LUCK! You're going to do awesome!!

Ok, funny story...I had some friends over for game night on Saturday...some running and some non-running people. Two of the people are multi-hundred mile race finshers. One game question was "What would a person wear to show that they are cool?" It just so happened that one of the guys had on his gargantuan Western States belt buckle. Sooo, I HAD to give the answer: "Someone who wears a big belt buckle." The crowd roared at this answer and the ultrarunner, in his defense went into the details of earning that prestigious belt buckle. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity... :) And that is no doubt one big buckle!!!

Vermont 100

Hey UR's...if you're looking for something fun in July, the Vermont 100 miler and 100K are still open. I think my group may be heading up there. The one guy we run with is in the Grand Slam, and the Vermont is one of his races. So it would be fun to be up there running with him and cheering him on. I'd opt for the 100K option...'cause I'm not quite ready for 100 miles just yet ;)

Hey, guess what? I got into Umstead!! Now its real. My first 50-miler is on the radar and creeping up fast. I've been running more than ever, but now I feel like I can really focus, knowing for sure that I have a place at the starting line come April 5th.

And...my running group send in our applications for the Vermont 100 today as well! My Plan: sign up for the 100K and see how Umstead goes. If I hate the 50-miler....or die....then I'll back out. The rest of the group is going for the full 100 miles. Hopefully I'll be done with the 100K and be there at the finish line to cheer them on!
