Ultra running

I am interested in getting into some longer running, and am looking for some advice from you Ultra pros. Any advice on what distance to start at, or books that may be helpful for a training plan?

A little background: I've done 5 half-marathons, 6 HIMs and 2 IMs in the last three years. I really have no interest in doing a 26.2 marathon...I know, don't ask  But would rather move up to ultra.

I may have the opportunity to do a 50K run in October (if its still open), and am wondering is that is good timing (since I just finished IMA) or if that's too soon after...any thoughts?

Any advice or suggestions would be great....and I appreciate it! -Andrea

Anton doesn't get on my nerve at all. Our long runs together have been a very Zen experience. I don't think I get on Anton's last nerve, though sometimes I am amazed he isn't. I am a babbling brook.

Are you kidding??? Freud would love me as a patient...I'd owe him millions to interpret my dreams year after year! Its funny that you're pleading your case, however ;) So, is Anton like Socrates in The Peaceful Warrior...?

And Kylie, I trained for the 50K in two months, after taking 2 full weeks off of running after IMA in July. I'm quite surprised at my continued level of fitness this time around....

If I had 2 months that would be one thing, but it is in a bit under a month (first week of Dec). I had been hoping to get in a couple of at least ~20 miles in Oct, but that just wasn't to be. So I'm worried I let the current distance slip too far. I'm still tempted though - I could get in a long of 16 or 18 or something tomorrow morning.

With 15 being my more recent long (26 at end of Aug in IM), and a month to the race, any tips on training? Or skip it?

Oh, I think you could get through it...I'm sure you have a high level of fitness and you're recovered from the IM...
Try the long run tomorrow...taking walking breaks will help to extend it...see how you feel. Decide after that...
You should have in, I think, at least a marathon before the 50k and you do...it was just awhile ago and you've been maintaining since.
Myself...I'd do it even though I know it might be tough.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I could finish. I just don't want to have to a take a month off to recover! Although I guess a month of bike fitness would be ok ;) Thanks... I just wasn't sure if only a couple 15ish milers and a number of 10-12 was really maintaining or not!

Yeah, I think it's maintaining...I don't think you'll cripple yourself either...just relax, have fun and don't worry about your time. three things you should do the first time at any distance.I think that getting in bike miles, while it doesn't help your running keeps you fit and helps prevent injury from running more than you should be.
What race? I have to know so I can cyber stalk ya!

Hahaha bike miles??? ;) My bike and I had a bit of a break, although I did do a couple fun rides and a couple on the mtb. Relax, fun, and no time stress = my plan if I did do it. Good to hear I might be ok for it.

The race would be the Ridgecrest 50k. Looks like a running group near me that I hope to start running with is targeting the Calico 50k. So I might do both!

They all look like a hoot!...shame I don't live out there...looks like you could run ultra every weekend!
Look...The year I did my first 50 miler I was living in a bad situation and had managed to get in two 18 milers...mind you I still was running 45-50 miles a week but only had time for short stuff...I finished. Mid pack. You can do this.

Thanks Anton. I just needed to hear from someone that has done this stuff that it wouldn't be stupid to go for the experience of the one soon. I just needed to know not doing it would be wussing out and not a smart choice... I really wasn't sure which it would be, so although I wanted to do it I also wanted to be smart about it.

And the altitude for it doesn't look horrible :) Which is good since my hill running is only just starting back up.

All teasing aside Kylie, if I can do it...then you most certainly can too :) I will admit that I'm feeling like an addict, however. Sometimes when we're running long on the weekend, during the run, I'm asking..."When are we running again? How far??? What's next???" It like I'm jonesing for another hit before I'm even done with the current one!! Ohhh man...I could be in trouble...you guys have led me to the dark side....

On that note...
A picture and a song :D

I GOT CRABS FROM DARTH VADER
Parody of Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places"

Blame it all on Artoo
Said the girl from Naboo
'Cause I followed him into that bar
A couple of drinks
And soon Jar Jar Binks
Was the best thing 'bout Star Wars so far

I had blue milk and Jack
With this guy dressed in black
He was strong, dark, and seven-foot-three
But when I went home with
The Lord of the Sith
That's not all that went home with me!

'Cause I got crabs from Darth Vader
When he took me back to his star freighter
And used the Force
On me, of course
But now I itch like a Tusken Raider
Shoulda never played with his light saber!
Oh, I got crabs
From Darth Vader!

She said, I got a butt
Like Jabba the Hutt
But Darth said he'd love to clone me
He’s not bad at nookie -
He roared like a Wookiee
Through episodes one, two, and three

But at double-sunrise
He grabbed his disguise
And dumped me in Tatooine's sand
Hope that freak went to bake
In that big lava lake
That's my last one-Jedi-Knight stand!

'Cause I got crabs from Darth Vader
When I got too close to that dictator
He said, I'll get you
And Lei-ya too
I love that sound from his respirator
But now I need an exterminator!
'Cause I got crabs
From Darth Vader!

All the freaks in Mos Eisley sing along:

I got crabs from Darth Vader
When he took me back to his star freighter
And used the Force
On me, of course
But now I itch like a Tusken Raider
Shoulda never played with his light saber!
Oh, I got crabs
From Darth Vader!

Ok so I think I can do it. The question now is what do I do leading up? The race is Dec 2nd, leaving me the rest of this week and then 3 full weeks. Today I got in 18.6 miles (Wed is my long day) -- a great run -- fog and relaxed and just enjoying! I'm not sure if I should get in 20 next Wed. or already start cutting distance down. Thoughts?

I'd get in one more long run next Wednesday...that leaves you 18 days to taper and recover...which should be fine for you you, young whippersnapper! A taper for an ultra is like an IM, 17 to 21 days.A friend of mine who has a fair ammount of 100 mile events under his belt often extends his long run by walking or riding afterward. Run 18 and when you are done, walk for another hour...time on the feet, or hop on the trainer and pedal easy for an hour...seems to work for him and it has for me too when I've tried it.

Scott...you going to sing that for the 50? If you do I'll be forced to recite "The Charge of the Light Brigade"

Yeah my issue is less running that far, and more having the time to do it! I will get in another long next Wednesday, and perhaps add another shorter run that evening since I just don't have enough time in the morning to run over 3 hours and walk more! Especially with the light conditions.

I'm glad I recover as well as I do... I can feel I used my legs, but in that "I'm getting stronger" kind of way, and not the "OMG I can't move" kind of way!

Thanks again Anton!

Ahhh, young whipper snapper, Socrates has spoken...and what he really means to say is that new drugs are worth trying...

I've been doing a mid-week run (like 8 miles or so), then hopping on my bike for another hour...just an easy spin, and that seems to be working for me too. Too bad tri doesn't work in that order...

And Beads, I imagine you have a bag full of ready-to-use quotes and sayings for every occasion, eh? Oh, and is that you in the Vader getup?

My hotel room for the dec 2nd ultra is reserved -- thanks for the hand on my back keeping me moving forward! I've looked at this race in 06 and 05, and both times didn't make it (foot issues, lazy, unsure, never "just did it", etc). I've even printed and filled out my entry form :)

Exactly! Although a nice thing about the ultras is they appear to be even cheaper than marathons! Which is nice, since they sound like a better experience, and then I can do more of them. I'm also tenatively down for one Jan 20th ;)
