I am interested in getting into some longer running, and am looking for some advice from you Ultra pros. Any advice on what distance to start at, or books that may be helpful for a training plan?

A little background: I've done 5 half-marathons, 6 HIMs and 2 IMs in the last three years. I really have no interest in doing a 26.2 marathon...I know, don't ask  But would rather move up to ultra.

I may have the opportunity to do a 50K run in October (if its still open), and am wondering is that is good timing (since I just finished IMA) or if that's too soon after...any thoughts?

Any advice or suggestions would be great....and I appreciate it! -Andrea

Well, I was hoping we could all meet up somehow. The WWR seems like a good one, and we've been wanting to visit Colorado. I think my running buddy is in for sure....my cousin, I'm not so sure about. So we'd need another 3 people to make it. But we have til November 1st.

The more I think about it, the better the 6x1 sounds...tougher, anyway  The elevation will be a huge challenge for me living in flat Florida, so I'd need some tips on training.

Kylie - the California one...can you do a 6-man team as well???

I was hoping for a kylie but alas :( she'll be stuck in school...
Did you run this weekend?...oh right, the Irish War or something like that...
I'll work on some other trifuelers...it would be fun to get 3 more from this bunch!

No I didn't run...I took a VERY needed four days off of running...check that, five days off and my body is thanking me. Unfortunately we couldn't celebrate an Irish win, but I'll always be a golden domer. How about you...how far did you run this weekend? I'm sure you ran enough for all of us ;)

Anyway, I'm sure that with your magical, influencial powers, you'll come up with another three victims, uh I mean, participants for the WWR....

There were definitely teams of 6/ultra teams when I did it, but I'm not seeing that info on their site now -- I have sent out an email to see.

I do think I'll be stuck at school... and if not stuck there I won't know until probably after January (when I will know who to talk to at the school). I'm definitely disappointed... I was excited until I made the date connection :(

21 on Saturday, 11 on Sunday..both kind of casual.
I hope to see Beads this weekend at Chessieman (I'm watching)...I'll run the WWR by him while he's at mile 22 of the run...he's AGWK though so it could be tough.
Good for you for NOT running Star...our bodies love us when we give them a break...

Well, after running 11 miles last Wednesday, and feeling like my entire body was inflamed, I thought I'd better take a break. And I've found that for me, taking 3-4 days completely off a few weeks out from a race really helps me recharge and recover.

Anyway, what are you calling Beads...AGWK??? Could be a good time to chat with him about the WWR...when he's a little spacy from running :)

AGWK...Age Grouper with Kids. One of the special breed of athlete that is a single parent and still finds time to train...
I'll see what I can do!
Good idea..rest is SOOOO important. I see many people, including some here at trifuel, who just don't rest enough...and they pay for it...I still want to be doing this when I'm 53...oh...wait. I am 53.

So, I was reading an ultra running book about walking during UR. The benefits of walking are clear (lower your HR, use fat for energy, mental break, etc). The author's suggestion was to run 25 minutes, then walk 5 minutes. What are your thoughts about that? He was talking more specifically for a 100-mile or 24-hour race, and the 5 minutes makes sense for that distance...but would you walk that long in a 50K or 50 miler?

I've heard more that you should use the terrain to judge where to walk and run -- walk *all* uphills, from the start. And run/jog downhills. And I think it was run/jog flats while you feel you can (but I'm not sure on that part).

There is no hard and fast about walking breaks...my advice is to find what works for you. (sorry). 25/5 works good for some others prefer10/1,others 5/1. on accurately measured courses, run a mile walk a minute is common. Play with it...
an example: For the JFK 50 miler the first 15 miles are road and mostly trail...walk the ups...run the downs and flats. the next 26.3 are on a flat dirt road with mile markers so I've done both run a mile/ walk a minute and 5/1. the last 8 iles are on a rolling road and it's 5/1 or walk the ups again...
At a 50k in Canada on the road I ran 20/1.
I prefer shorter walking breaks...although I have used the 25/5, so Iusually limit my breaks to 1 minute...sometimes though in ultras it flips...and becomes 1/5! but it shouldn't for a 50k.
I have met folks who have walked the whole of a 50 miler and 100 miles for that matter, but they needed a 30 to 36 hours cut off for that.
Many Ur's in a 24 hour or 100 miler do nothing but walk at night especially on trails...but if you've worked on your walking you can still make 4+ mph. I know several folks said ,and you can find it at Kevin Sayers web site that most folks generally don't run any more in a 100 than they do in a 50 miler....but that is for the common folk.
Again...you have to find what works for you...I did, and know that several variations will work for me...always good to have more than one method in your quiver.

How did I know that would be the answer...? As usual, trial and error :) I know that 50K isn't much comparitively speaking, but this chick will be walking some of that 50K for sure! I like reading different people's approaches to this endurance stuff.

Ok, so we did our 23-mile run this morning, the last long one before the 50k in two weeks. The first 14 miles, I felt awesome! I'm sure having 5 days off helped a lot. But I've been noticing that I kinda hit the wall around mile 15-16. I felt shaky and had dead-legs. Maybe its because we stoped at our cars and refuel and stretch for too long, maybe I hadn't taken in enough electrolytes (its still freakin' hot here) or...?

I took another 2 electrolytes and walked some (just like last time) and I began to feel better. But those last few miles were tough. So we walked more, but it seems that the more we walk, the harder it is to run. Thoughts on that one?

My longest run for this race was 23 miles, with a next-day run of around 3. That's at least 5 miles and/or another hour of running that I'll have to tack on come race day. Every run seems to take longer than the last, without additional mileage. I'm a little freaked about being an hour shy (at least) of the goal, and that I'm going to struggle alot. Any encouraging words?

I just finished reading Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes. Its good motivation, with my 50k coming up on Saturday. If you haven't read it, he tells about his Western States Ultra, Badwater, South Pole Marathon and finally the 199-mile relay that he ran solo (reminded me of the WWR). I feel like an pansy "just" running a 50K...but ya gotta start somewhere :) And I have a feeling this is just the start....

Taper Star,taper!...these weeks should be a reducing of milage and I'd forgo time on the bike too. I think your last long run being two weeks out is a tad close. Like marathons, 17 to 21 days is better...
Things will go just fine..."Still freakin' hot" could easily be the reason for what you feel is a less than what you expected preformance on the training run...just look at Chicago or the Army 10 this past weekend. Kylie is right..trust the miles.
AS to Dean..I read his book, saw a talk he gave too. He is the 'Ultramarathon man" only because of his shameless self promotion among the non-ultra running community...I know dozens of people and know of even more whose accomplishments far exceed his...but they are humble and don't talk about them. Look through UR sites and such...you don't see him mentioned mucn at all.

I know, I know...he's the Lance Armstrong of ultrarunning. However, that doesn't discount his accomplishments. Just being able to read people's experiences in 100's and watching movies like Running on the Sun (which I will watch again this week ;) ) help me keep perspective and motivation. So if any of you have wrttien a race report on a longer race...lead me to it!

Last weekend and this week have been very low running miles...I'm getting antsy! You know the feeling. Saturday's on its way..... And it looks as though a "cool front" (which may drop the temps 5 degrees and lower the humidity) my be coming just in time!

Best of luck Star! You'll do fine...will send all the good Karma I can...just went outside and asked the cold front that came through last night to keep rolling your way.
Eat and drink. Stick to YOUR race plan. Start your walk breaks from the beginning. Be Positive. Avoid runners that are negative...it can be infectious.

Hey friends...thank you for the encouraging words! I posted my 50K race report in the Race Report forum. It was a blast and tough and wonderful and I can hardly wait to do another, even though I'm feeling a little rough today ;) I LOVE this stuff!!!

And PS Anton: thanks for the good weather karma...it was in the 50's when we started. I heated up to the high 80's midway through, but we're used to that. At least we had a break for 15 miles!

Ok, now that I have a looong run under my belt, will you give me some advice on these 3 questions:

1. In the race Saturday I had a full feeling in my stomach and I didn't feel I could take in any calories after three hours. I had eaten a Hammer bar and 200 cal's of Sustained Energy around 2 hours before the race. Is the problem that I didn't allow enough time to digest it? Someone mentioned that I may have been dehydrated, which gives a similar feeling...could that be it? Or...? (I didn't have this problem at IMA after eating the same breakfast).

2. How do YOU overcome your "wall?" And how many can I expect as I start running longer distances?

3. Sorry for being gross...but...what do you do about toenail fungus or black toenails? I have a toenail that's being pushed away from the skin and though its hard, I could probably peel it off. What's the key to toenail care?

Question 1. For running a slower ultra two hours should have been fine for digestion. Running for a long time is different than even an IM...you need to finsd a fueling solution that you use for Ultras. Try real food and not manufactured. Save that for during the race...but that works for me...could have been dehydration...again your fluid needs will be different....If you haven't caught on, this is a whole different animal and different stratagies will need to be experimented with.
Question 2. As simple as it sounds...keep moving forward. EVERYONE hits a wall in an ultra, for many it's around 30-35 miles. With experience you'll understand that this will pass, but the hard part is realizing that and keeping on the move, and being flexible with your nutrition.
Question 3. Black nails...they'll come off in their own time...just keep trimming...fungus? That's different My Dr. tells me and I've read that most of the human population has it or will get it. There are tons of "Home remidies" that work a tad, but the only things that really work are Drugs designed to get rid of it...some of which are hard on the kidneys...and once gone..it can come back...so as far as toenail fungus...good luck with that!

I am getting a little excited. It is a new challenge after all.

I had some skin peeling off my toes on my right foot in the last couple of weeks that has been hurting. Something has been rubbing my foot the wrong way. I have to lube up my foot before I run, and now it seems to be helping out.

I am hoping to keep all my toenails though!!

As far as ultras, I'm trying to decide if a 50k the first weekend in Dec would still be a good idea. I haven't been running as much as usual with a week of vacation, a week of sick, and a week or so of smokey air from the fires.

Ok, let me start by saying that I am a big-time dreamer and dream about all kinds of crazy bizarre fun stuff. And last night, Anton and Beads were the topic of my dream:

Anton was running a 24-hour race in an enclosed gym track (ohh what fun!) that was actually pretty big and landscaped for some odd reason. I caught up to him, and although we hadn't met before, we started chatting as we walked. After talking a bit about the race, he started talking about Beads, and how they've known each other for years. He said that even though they're good friends, they get on each other's last nerve at these kinds of events  (gee, wonder where that idea came from...!) and they usually don't run together. We jogged for awhile, then he led me to a sleeping area (now, don't get the wrong idea!). He was going to nap for awhile and took out a pillow he'd brought (haha!). He power napped for 10 minutes then got up again, and showed me how to "fold" a pillow correctly so it can be tucked into a cover until needed again (ahh, always teaching the newbies...). He wanted to break 100 miles and he started running again. The end.

Clearly some ideas came from the recent posts, but have you any other interpretations? :)

Well if you can't fold a pillow correctly, how can you get on with your day?
What you described sounds like a 'Six Day." Mostly just a biking thing now on an indoor track complete with sleeping tents in the center and fake plants. The Amsterdam 6 Day just finished this week. They used to be common as running events in the US about 100 years ago. (nothing new under the sun, folks). Like the Madison Square Garden 6 Day...folks would run for 6 days on an indoor track with naps and such, eating while walking...most distance won.
Thanks for the dream time..even if it was just about running ;)

I think you could do it :) We have a trail marathon coming up, and I was going to opt for the 1/2 mary (due to the fact that I haven't run over 20 miles since the 50K and then I was briefly sick...so I hadn't done much long running for a couple weeks). But when I went to sign up, they added a 30K option...so that should be perfect. I probably won't need a pillow for 18 miles, eh?

I'm still not sure. I haven't been getting in the long runs I had been hoping for, and while I really want to do an ultra I don't want to do it in a way that makes me have to take a running break! So we'll see... How long with the IM fitness from late Aug last? I've done a couple long runs since then... but the last was mid Oct for 15 miles (not even super long). It looks like nothing over 16 since the IM in Aug... so perhaps it would be smarter to wait.

And Anton that was a fun read :)

I think Freud would have some interesting thought on your dream.
Anton doesn't get on my nerve at all. Our long runs together have been a very Zen experience. I don't think I get on Anton's last nerve, though sometimes I am amazed he isn't. I am a babbling brook.
