Ultra running

I am interested in getting into some longer running, and am looking for some advice from you Ultra pros. Any advice on what distance to start at, or books that may be helpful for a training plan?

A little background: I've done 5 half-marathons, 6 HIMs and 2 IMs in the last three years. I really have no interest in doing a 26.2 marathon...I know, don't ask  But would rather move up to ultra.

I may have the opportunity to do a 50K run in October (if its still open), and am wondering is that is good timing (since I just finished IMA) or if that's too soon after...any thoughts?

Any advice or suggestions would be great....and I appreciate it! -Andrea

I do recall someone talking about the Dark Side...but I don't remember anyone warning me about pushers! *Psst...Hey buddy...how about an Ultra??* But, wait, if I'm going to do a 50k, and Anton and Beads are going to do a 50- miler...then I think the rest of you need to step up! :D

Ok, this UR thing is nutty! I woke up at 4:00am this morning to run in the woods in the complete darkness with complete strangers! What the...? I've never been up that early to run for fun...and in the woods!

Ok, actually, it was pretty cool...6 of us headed out for the warm-up 5-mile loop. Luckily a nice guy gave me a flashlight, 'cause I don't have any of that kind of gear of my own quite yet. Life is different in the wee small hours of the morning (when you're coherent enough to appreciate it). After that loop, I hooked up with another group (because the first was going another 15!) and ran a 7.7-mile loop. I was pretty tired when I got to the opening, and they headed out for another loop. Pretty cool...

I spent the afternoon watching Badwater Youtube flicks. Amazing and VERY inspirational. Anyone given that a thought? :-) Na, I don't think I'd run to work, then they'd REALLY think I was crazy. But then again..... :-)

There are some races, that I just won't think about...Badwater, The Barkley, The Kerwendal, that 60 day 3,000 mile race that's held in the Bronx...
Check out the Badwater site...some say getting in is harder than the race!

See, this is what I'm talking about with the cyclist/triathlete attitude:

I was at the park this morning for a 25-mile ride and a 6-mile run (working on endurance, you know). On my third bike loop, I get passed by a fast biker. I'm just enjoying my music and keeping my heart rate low...so good for him. I make it back to my car and change into my running clothes, and around two miles into my grass run, the guy bolts by me on foot. I can tell my heart rate is sky-high because its like 95 degrees with 90% humidity today...so I'm going slow. He passes and doesn't say a word, though we're the only ones out there. I make it back to my car and start stretching when he comes in. We're literally 10 feet from each other and he turns his back toward me while he does whatever and I stretch. Again, we're the only ones in the parking lot. Finally I say, "That breeze feels so good...its sooo hot out there!" He mumbles "uh-huh" and turns his back to me again.

I don't get this kind of attitude. I mean, I'm not his competition...I'm neither male nor in his age group. He is clearly faster than me. So what the...? I just shake my head at those kind of people and go on my merry way. He can take his "26.2" sticker and ........... :D

Just some bad Mojo on his part.
Keep smilin', and kill them with kindness.

Feel pity for them because they have to carry the weight of that bad attitude around.

I kinda think of it as someone who has to carry a load of poop in his shorts. Once you change your pants(attitude) and you don't have to carry it around anymore you'll feel better.

You are the better person for having the good attitude and trying to reach out to him.

His loss not yours :D

Jerks are everywhere Star...sorry.
Of all the ultrarunners I've met...hundreds,maybe...I can think of only a few that had an attitude. I say "Had" because they came...they raced ultras for a few years...they won a few..they disappeared. Just like a lot of jerky tri-heads I've met. Not too defend him if he was being rude - I just know that being a very shy person myself when having to interact with people directly, that I can come across that way as well, as I don't say much - (I'm kinda the anti-Beads! ) especially with someone I don't know. I'm not saying that this is the case here, but perhaps another perspective. But if he was just blowing you off then :p to him!

Thanks, guys. I just wonder sometimes what's going on in people's lives that make them act like they do. Especially when they have the ability and means to do triathlon...shouldn't they be happy and loving life and appreciative? Well, I've come a long way in that department myself. I also realize that there are shy people out there, and that can sometimes make them look aloof. Anyway....thanks for listening!

My wife asked me last night about what my race schedule might be like next year... I mentioned that I might like to try an Ultra - nothing big just maybe a 50k. Through a look of shock and disbelief - as she knows that running is not a favorite of mine... stated that I am officially crazy, well she was a bit more colorful in her declaration ;)

I blame Anton for planting this seed!

Ummm, I don't think my husband realizes that I'm actually signed up for the 50K in Oct....Could be a surprize that morning when I get up earlier than usual! He also has some, ah-hem, interesting comments about me meeting the running group at 5:30AM :)

I can understand the shy thing, but usually if someone approaches me in a friendly way, and not trying to take my wallet, I'll be friendly back. Even if I am feeling bad or having a bad day.

It makes me feel better.

The poopy pants analogy comes from changing lots of diapers, just a few years ago. The girls would get cranky carrying a doody in their diapers, and when they were cleaned up and changed they were in a much better mood.

RV- I blame Anton too. He has talked about it the last couple of years at Disney and now I am hooked into his nefarious plan!! :D

Oh, and I made Mike promise he'd pace me if I ever do 50mi or longer... I don't think he believes he made the promise, but I will still hold him to it ;) He's a whiner when it comes to blisters and such, so I don't know if ultras will ever hold his attention like they do mine.

Ok, Anton, when you say I can substitute a long run with a long bike (for the back-to-back long runs)...how long were you talking? Yesterday I rode a hilly 35 miles and today ran 13 trail miles. I was wondering if the long ride should be longer...What are your thoughts?

When in ultra mode I usually run on Saturday and then do the biking on Sunday...It just works for me that way (For IM training I bike first then run)...Doing the run first means you have fresh legs for the run ,which is really waht you are training for anyway...The bike gets you out for ore time on the aerobic engine without trashing the legs more, and helping to avoid injury...I think your 35 was fine....make sure though, that you get in some back to back long runs....like 15 Saturday, 10 on Sunday. Keep the pace easy...take walk breaks...

Good advice, thank you Anton :) I will do more running than biking, but I had to take the opportunity to get back in the hills! It does make sense to run first. I think next weekend will be a big running weekend....I'll probably skip the bike.

Also, the 50k is October 13th...when should my last long run be, and how long?

I taper for ultras the same as an IM or a Marathon...A BIG weekend about three weeks out, then start the taper...decrease the milage...maintain some intensity...stay injury free...It varies for everyone of course....some do two weeks...but you are an accomplished endurance athlete and know what sort of taper is best for you!

Coach?...Me? Oh, Paleeeze...just a friend helpin' out.
Since you are "only" doing a 50k.(;) )..you can train as you do for a Marathon...with the B to B long workouts. A 20 or so miler with a longish workout the next day will see you through...It's 5 miles farther than a Marathon remember...that isn't that much (relative to other long events!)
Most folks really look at time when training for Im"s ...for Ultras I think milage is better. Unless you are a minor god you'll run the 50k at a slower average pace than the marathon, especially if it's on trails or at night. Having a milage number under your belt adds to the confidence..."Oh I've run 30 in one weekend, with a three week taper,I can surely run 30 in under the time cut off on race day!"
I don't lock into my milage numbers...If I'm supposed to run 20 and get there and feel good I'll push out another two or three.
If I feel bad I won't.
Many folks often use marathons as catered training runs for 50k,50 mile and above distances...three weeks out form the main event...

Which 50k are you thinking about, again?

heehee...you're the closest thing to an Ultra coach I've got right now ;) I'm doing the Croom 50k here in Brooksville....I think you said you had some friends do that one.

I'm always confused about training for mileage vs. time...training for time never made sense to me....especially since I'm pretty slow. Anyway, I'll plan to build up to a 20 mile one day and a 10 mile the next...sounds like a plan. I'm confident that I can do the distance, since it's only a 50k.

Oh yeah, does your fueling change for Ultras as compared to tri? I pretty much do liquid fueling for tris, except that I add 2 Hammer bars on the bike portion for the IM. Am I going to need to train my body for solid food as I get into running over 50k?

Fuel as for a marathon...but ultras are a different animal. Running tends to be more intense than biking and certainly more punnishing....Your body tends to want more...you won't however be out nearly as long for a 50k as you have been for an IM....it's just that your caloric needs may be different just running.
Above 50k...many start wanting solid food, Pringels, pretzels,PB and J...coke, soup...sandwhiches...whatever they can get down and keep down. Ultras are funny...sometimes you come to an aid station and some things appeal to you and some things don't. Go with what appeals to you. It's a message from your body.
Oh yes,,,I remember now...the Croom...sorry, 53 year old memory.

Hmmm, interesting. Because I find that when I run, and more so in the IM marathon, I want very little to eat....especially after mile 13 or so. I'm sure that UR is very different, and I'll have to figure it out as the distances get longer. But I can almost bet you that I won't be eating pizza along the way :p

I eat no solid foods, and rarely even a gel in an IM marathon. However, in adventure racing (where the time on the course and pace are often closer to how I imagine ultras) I do eat lots of weird solid foods.

Pringles...manna from heaven in an ultra...Do I eat them any other time? No! Did a 50k once where they had haggis at an aid station (I @#*& you not) and I rolled in and went "OH my Gawd! Haggis!"
It tasted so good...nice and salty...you'd be surprised what you might eat...

Ok, the thought of haggis makes me want to puke! Being a veggie, I'd rather die than eat haggis. I keep thinking of that David Letterman show where the guy eats a whole bowl full of haggis....ewwww! My stomach is turning.... Thanks Anton!

Ok, tell me that this 50k race isn't going to take me 8 hours to finish!!! I ran 8 miles (in the grass) on Saturday (it took 1.5 hours...that's about right), then "ran" 14 miles on the 50k race loop at o'dark hundred on Sunday. Seriously, it took us nearly 3 hours to complete 14 miles! What the... I feel like I'm in a time warp out there. Sure we walked uphill, and running in the trails is slow-going as opposed to pavement, but really. What's that all about???

Finish time at an ultra...for most folks ,especially a first time, is not about speed.
Much also depends on the course...I've done road 50k's in 5:10 finishing mid pack.
I've done some trail 50k's that take the winners 5:10! with a mid pack finish at about 6:30-7:00.
Running on trails is slower for the average runner but you can get faster by running trails more...practice...I ran 17 yesterday, first 8 on a flat dirt road at 9:50 pace (my long run pace.) The next 6 on a rolling trail and my pace dropped to 11:00. Still within my long run pace ballpark but 1:10 slower per mile at about the same RPE.
Walking hills in an ultra goes a long way in saving gas...especially if you work at your walking...I can walk up hill faster than many can run it...I passed folks at IMLP this year on hills who were "running." It's comperable to biking up hill..standing up on the cranks gets you up faster but has a huge energy expendature...spinning up is a little slower but uses less energy... and conservation on energy is what ultras...especially your first one is about.
Look at the results of last years Croom and see where a 6:30 finish would put you...at the pace you were going today....you'd be right around there.

Thanks, Anton. I'm hoping its just the heat and humidity slowing me down. I really hope that it starts to cool off some by mid October. But it is what it is and yes, my goal is to finish ;) According to previous races, I'd be in the rear of the pack!

On another note, the people I've been running with are signed up for the Umstead 100-mile run on April 5, 2008. There is a 50-mile option. The thing is that the online registration is closed, and there aren't many slots left. I emailed the RD and he said to get my app in asap. Anyone interested in meeting me there???? You can check out the race info at: http://umstead100.org/. Come on...any takers???

There are plenty of other hundreds and of course 24 hour races where the diligent ultrarunner can break 100 miles.

I know..I may even be too late to get in...we'll see. I'm trying to sign up for 50 miles...I'm not quite ready for 100! I've been looking into other 50-milers in CA and AZ and CO. I think having people on the course that I know will be a HUGE mental help...that's why I'm trying to get into Umstead. And I've also read and heard that the course is not horribly "difficult" (as if running 50 miles isn't going to be difficult).

If you want a 50 miler race in January in CA, check out the Catalina Avalon Island 50 miler. Supposed to be great. I'm still playing with the idea of doing a 50k Dec 3rd and then that one...

you certainly have the mental strength to comlete an ultra given ur IM experience. i am a baby on the ultra circuit having only completed one 35 miler and one 50. i used the 25 miler as a training run for the 50. i built up to about 20-22 miles. one thing that was tough for me was learning to mix in fast walking into my training. because of the technical terrain of the ice age trail (ice age 50--le grange, wi) i walked up most of the steep hills. there were aid stations with food, water, and sports drinks every 5-6 miles. all in all it was an awesome experience and i hope urs is too.

good luck with your training, ask if u need anything.

Cool Jbird...and you got it right...walk the uphills, run the downs and flats...unless you are a minor god!

I keep tinking about what ultra I will get to do :) It's like a present of so many choices... right now I think either Ridgecrest 50k (Dec 2nd about 2.5-3 hours from me, on a Sunday so Mike could go with) or Northface Endurance Challenge 50k (Dec 1st right by my mom's house and a blog runner friend who might be interested). Fun fun fun!!

Scope out the courses as best you can before hand, even if it's just talking to EXPERIENCED ultra runners.
I've done 50k's (Like the Catoctin 50k) which are harder than many 50 milers because of terrain. Just so you know how far in you're jumpin' !
