Triathlon newb with serious training questions

Hi everyone,

Me and my wife decided to train together for a triathlon so the training has begun. I'm a decent runner (5k in 28min PR), stronger cyclist but not a great swimmer (working on it with my wife who was a jr olympian when she was younger). Here's my dilemma:

I am interviewing/in the process of becoming a firefighter or police officer (testing with both departments) so I need to train with strength training for the respective academies. Is there a way I can incorporate the necessary Tri training with my strength training? I'm not doing any heavy lifting and only strength training about 3 days a week max.

Thanks!!

training well is training with a goal, and splitting your goals is going to diffuse your effectiveness at achieving the desired results

maybe train for your job now (and get it!),and work in the endurance stuff around it, as opposed to the other way around

then come back to the tris with more specificity

Interesting that you say you're strength training and not lifting heavy when that is how you develop strength... Google the "force-velocity curve"... Now, if you're new to lifting, all your gains are nuerological for the first 4-6 weeks, people confuse this with strength gains but it's not. Once you have adapted to lifting weights you will not gain strength until your lifting heavy or 85-90% of your 1 Rep Max... As far as endurance training while strength training, timing your workouts is what is important... Heavy in the AM, Light in the PM, OFF next AM, Heavy in PM, Light in AM, Light in PM, then start over for a total of 6 days... (heavy and light have to do with intensity and not duration) Also, stick with the big three twice a week: squat, deadlift and bench... The workout should not be more than 30-40 min. (3 sets 6 reps with heavy weight that challenges your last rep) Don't waste your time with body building movements like bicep curls, tricep ext, and other single-joint lifts, they are for show-off muscles. I should note here that more info is needed to assess your needs so these are just general suggestions.
