Stress Fracture - bad idea to race through it?

I stopped running about a month ago, as I thought I had a shin splint and thought I could rest, ice, and recover with enough time before my race. I ran 6 miles last week and have been in a lot of pain since then. It even hurts when I am walking in sneakers. I finally went to the doctor and found out that I actually have a stress fracture in my left distal tibia.

My race is in 2 weeks (the NYC olympic tri). Is it a really bad idea to do the race and run through the pain and then let it heal?

I'd ask your doctor for his advice (which will likely be, "Don't do the race."). You might ask the NYC Tri organizers if they'll let you defer until next year, but it may be late for that. Given how bad you felt after running six miles (with no swim or bike preceding it), I wouldn't take the chance of doing the tri and making your injury worse…maybe much, much worse.

They shoot horses that have that injury...

Seriously? race through a stress fracture!? is this a real question?? of course you should not!

Do not even think about it! You won't perform to your best, will be mad about that AND more injured to boot so unable to do ANY racing or training for months. Bad bad bad idea...!

Thanks for all your responses...my head knows it's not a good idea to race, but my heart needed to hear just how bad of an idea it really is. It's just a bummer to get injured so close to a race you enjoy and have been training for.

tgdineen - I actually was able to defer my entry for next year. Apparently for the NYC tri, they give you up until the day before the actual race to defer. So at least that's a sliver lining.

Very glad to hear that...you're taking a sensible approach that will help you race for many years to come.

I'm no doctor, but, uhhh.... no you should not. Good decision. Wait for it to heal! Like anything give it time or the fracture will only get more separated.
