Over hydrate?

So, I had a race a few weeks ago and was in my opinion really prepared for it( half IM). I read somewhere( can not remember where) that one has to hydrate a few days ahead of the race and not only the day before, and so I did, YES I did. I drank about 1.5 gallons of water a day for 3 days. I drove back to ATL from Baltimore and had to stop about every half hour to pee!

Come race day, the temp was abnormal low for Macon,GA(55 and high was 88), so I don't think it was that. I ate the same the night before and breakfast. The swim went fine, t1 was good and off for 56miles. Not even 10 miles in and the leg cramping started. Went on for the whole bike leg. At times was ok, but still niggling. After the poor bike, and through t2, the run starts. Not even 300 yards I could feel this is not good. At mile two servere cramping started, so much that both legs stiffened up. After a couple of minutes I shuffle along at snails pace. Finally at mile 6 I throw the towel in and could not take it any more. DNF! The first ever!

Seeing that it was a B/C race, I was not too upset about it(well a bit! Nobody wants a DNF on their resume!) and also did not want to injure myself for IMAZ at end of year. So, here is my question - can one over hydrate before a race? Or could it have been something else?

Absolutely, it can happen.

Question...were you drinking just water, or were you also taking in lots of electrolytes? If you were only drinking water, you likely just diluted and pissed away vitamins/minerals/electrolytes, setting you up for some nice cramping.

But, if you did take in lots of electrolytes(with the water), then maybe it was the humidity, and not so much the heat.

You may have diluted your plasma sodium.

Thanks for the feedback. Ben, great podcast. Very interesting how much we are told to take in. Btw I am very familiar with Dr. Tim Noaks. I am South African and he is very well known in the sports community in SA. I deffinately over hydrated and forced myself to drink water days leading into the race. Learnt my lesson!

Drinking excessive water may resolve many problem like if you drink 7-8 cups daily then the risk of getting heart attack is quite low, it may prevent from cancer also. For example if you are having headache then drink 1 full glass of water which relax you also.
