Intermittent fasting and endurance sports?

Does anyone know anything about this topic? I haven't done a lot of research on it but it appears to be the latest thing. From what I have read, it seems to be a strategy for managing weight control and fat loss. It seems like it might be useful for achieving race weight. Maybe. A friend of mine wanted me to try it but I wasn't sure if endurance athletes could do it. It seems like the fast would occur for 17 hours and allow for a 7 hour feeding window. Some people apparently find it better than the "several small meals a day" approach because it allows for two large meals, aiding in satiety.

Just curious what other people think about it.

sounds like a way of slowing down one's metabolism and therefore NOT burning fat.
I go back to vjohnson's view... fat is burned in a fire fueled by carbs.

I don't think its a good idea for endurance junkies.... The purpose of fasting isn't to loose weight, its to find inner peace within yourself and to search deeper and deeper within yourself (yeah really deep stuff there).

I did a fast for a couple days when I was on a low stress load recovery week and I dropped the weight but really I think the hardest part is not gaining it back once you start eating again because your brain naturally wants to compensate for the lost weight.

Yep, you can certainly do it. To minimize your body entering into a catabolic state, the 8 hour feeding window, 16 hour fasting window works well. During the 16 hour fast, include:

5-10g amino acids, 2x
servings of greens like Enerprime or Capragreens, 2x
2-4 tablespoons coconut oil or mct oil
2-3 cups green tea

Hope that helps!
