Brand New... Literally

Hello everyone,

I am a college student with a pretty athletic background (decent basketball player, college golf recruit, small running background) and decided the other day that I was going to set a goal for myself. My goal, all though this may seem crazy, is to complete a sub-10 IM in 10 years or less. I am only 20 so I have time on my side, I just wanted to join a community of people who have similar goals as myself! Thanks for the support and any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Read this pros blog and then update your goal to sub-10 IM in 5 years or less.

At 20 I'm sure you have the time and sounds like the drive to reach this goal. Best of luck, you came to the right place for support.

I guess you could read and follow the advice on that blog post if you too are a freak of genetics! I always love those "Qualify for Kona in eight hours a week" type of stories.

Welcome to the group. Yes, going sub-10 is a great goal. When might that occur? Who knows. My advice would be to enjoy the journey. Learn how to run after biking. Learn to perform well at the Olympic distance. Learn the importance of nutrition during a race at the half ironman distance. Learn the true meaning of "bonk", then race the distance well. Go do your first ironman, read all about what to do and then go suffer by doing it your own way. We've all been there. Eventually we figure a few things out and some of us actually become proficient. The journey can be great fun. Welcome to it.

Good luck on your journey...and welcome. I'm sure with dedication and consistency you can achieve sub-10 in under 10. Learn to love the bike...

I would say, don't get crazy with buying to much gear your first year or two. This is will be my third season, and I wish I spent more time swimming, biking, and running- and less time caring about what I "had to have." Get some good running shoes, try not to break the 10% rule to often, and have fun with your first season. It's actually always fun, just don't get caught up being to competitive your first season.

That sounds like a very realistic goal for someone in your age group. Welcome to Trifuel!

Dam! I couldn't have said it any better myself! Spot on!

Go for it, I wish that I could be 20 again

How exciting. I wish I had found triathlon in my twenties! :)

Your resume qualifies you for attitude and aptitude. Now it's just down to genetics and pig headedness. Can you sustain the hurt...?

should we go over to MCTT and invite folks over here?
