How often do you pee?

At a Holiday party a buddy of mine brought up that he had recently had a kidney stone. A doctor in the group asked how often he went pee during a common day and his answer was maybe once or twice. I visibly gawked at this (I had gone twice since being there for 2 hours). I replied that I went to the bathroom a lot, and as the day went on it was common for me to pee once and hour if not more. The group thought this was WAY to often, and someone mentioned I should get checked for over active bladder. I explained to them how much water and nuun I drink (also explained to them what nuun was) and the doctor seemed to think I was just fine. Anyway, I thought I would pose this to the tri-fuel community, mostly because I think it is funny. How many times do you pee during a day? and what is your everyday hydration like? Also, for the record, YES I do pee in the pool, A LOT!

not in the pool, but I pee about once an hour or so, more urgently when i drink something with electrolytes in it and am not just getting done with a workout. Less on LSD days, only because i don't feel like i have to during long workouts, so however long the workout is, that is how long i wait.

kinda gross that you pee in the pool. that water goes in other people's mouth and eyes and stuff.

About the same. But I would never pee in the pool. I can hold it for an hour! I just go before I get in and after I get out. I look at it this way, if everyone peed in the pool, that is what we would all be swimming in, just one big vat of pee. Doesn't that gross YOU out!

Probably every hour or two...please let me know where you swim so I can stay away ;-)!

Once or twice a day is no good. I don't really county, but it is several times a day. However, my daily hydration is usually 24oz of Starbucks, six or so can of diet Coke, then a couple of beers at night. I hate water ... unless it is heavily caffeinated or has hops and malt. There are many days when my fluid intake consists entirely of Brown.

This will quickly turn into a threadjack re: peeing in the pool, but if you swim in a pool that has any of those aqua aerobics classes, especially those with seniors, do you ever see them get out? I'm probably mixing my social media, but I recall someone here and/or on Facebook who teaches said classes and commented on how her senior class members sit in the lobby sucking down coffee all morning and then jump right in for an hour-long class.

I drink (usually) two liters or more of water per day. Once or twice a day? Nah..... For perspective, I had to stop 3xs during the bike at IM and I was trying my best not to.

The average person should micturate about 2 cups of urine every two hours. Seems right to me...I go about every hour or two and I drink about 60 to 80 ounces a day including my usual evening " beverage".

hahahha this is funny but real. I pee 4 times before lunch, 4 after and probably 2 more times before to go to bed. My last drink of fluids is at 8 pm so I can go again by ten otherwise I will wake up in the
middle of the night .
I do not swim often, I know it is my weakest problem, but when I am in the pool I hold it until I am back in the bathroom, it's a no no in the pool.

Probably every 1 - 2 hours. I drink a lot of tea during the day in the winter and that keeps me hydrated. Peeing in the pool is more than just a grossness issue, it can cause greater concentrations of DBP's, including trihalomethanes, which are potentially cancer-causing substances created when chlorine interacts with contaminants in the pool. Taking a cleansing shower (not that 2 second rinse-off) and not urinating in the pool not only help protect people from your bodily fluids and any perfumes or oils on your skin, they also help protect you from overexposure to nasty byproducts of chlorination.

I knew there was a reason I swam in a natural spring and avoided the pool!

I can't pee in the pool, like I can't pee on the bike (not that I've tried in the pool :), but I hold it till I get out and go to the bathroom.
As far as how often, I probably pee every hour or two. I get up at least once during an 8 hr sleep

I pee about once every 3-4 hours, and drink close to a gallon of water a day... if not more! I don't pee in the pool though, just because im afraid they might have that blue stuff in there!! yikes, that would suck.

I probably go once every two hours and i have problems with an over active bladder due to a combo of child birthing and my nerves. When needed I take Detrol which is fantastic.

Everybody that gets to know me knows I go to the bathroom all the time and will always go before leaving home, or anywhere that has a bathroom before any kind of travel no matter the distance.

Even though I go all the time I cannot go in the pool, ocean, on the bike....

even though deep down i know people/kids etc probably pee in the pool i dont need it to be confirmed. i quite like being in denial. if you choose to pee in the shower or bath that is okay as it is just you but the pool has more than just one person in it. i will get out of the pool and dash to the toilets before returning back to my laps. i drink diet coke all day and a guiness at night so i am dashing to the ladies often.

TriAu,

To pee in the pool is disgusting! how can you even admit to that? get out and go to the toilet. Now I know why I swim early in the morning, hopefully not too much p!ss in the water.

I have peed whilst racing and have no trouble doing it on the bike, bike shoes need to be washed afterwards.

Have you ever watched a college swim practice? You think we just didn't pee for 3 hours while throwing down 10,000 yds on a saturday morning? Where do you think the 6 waters bottles went? I NEVER remember a time I was allowed to leave the pool deck to pee. Not when I was in high school, not when I was in college. Just so you know, I'm always the first one in the water, and I pee a lot. Only triathletes would get out of the pool just to go pee.

No, I have never watched a college swim practice and I have never swam for three hours. However you are not now training under a coach that won't allow you to leave the pool, so there is no excuse for urinating in the water. If I managed a pool and I knew of anyone intentionally peeing in it I would not allow them in. Also if only triathletes would get out of the pool to pee, that's me and proud of it.

Our pool is constantly being shut down due to poor water quality. Apparently it is really difficult to maintain "safe" water levels in public pools. The chlorine helps but doesn't do a great job and killing the bacteria and other micro-organisms that are constantly growing in the nice soup of human fluids. If everyone just pulls together and makes the decision not to "pee" in the pool, we can go a whole week with having our pool not closed. I see people get out of the pool and use the facilities all the time and then get back in. In fact I have even seen children do it. I think it is more so a case of laziness and a lack of respect for the community, as opposed to college habits. Besides, swim training isn't like a concentration camp, I am sure if you get up and go to the bathroom, nothing will happen to you.

I distinctly remember getting out of the pool during college swim practice to run to the locker room. I can't imagine having 25 - 30 swim teamers just peeing in the pool for several straight hours. Yuk! Fortunately my kid's coach seems to feel the same way as I see the kids get out all the time, and get back in, no problem.

I'm pretty sure TriAu isn't the only triathlete peeing in the pool.
I guess we all think it's ok to piss all over ones self in the hopes of breaking 6 hours in a HIM, but pee in a chlorinated pool is too much to bear?

I don't ask anyone else to put their lips on my bike saddle after a HIM.

LOL! But I think I will personally use Ironmom's strategy when I do my first HIM, where I time myself using the potty, and then just subtract it from my overall time. I don't want piss on my bike.

Get your ass out of the pool, yer dirty. But yep I pee closer to your regularity than the guy with the stone. There is zero reason to pee in the pool. It's just disrespectful and dirty.

maybe it is a training strategy so you learn how to swim fast and you are always the lead off guy !

There was a time I would pee maybe twice a day. I was also really dehydrated as I drank next to nothing all day. Now I pee every 2-3 hours and drink only water, coffee/tea, and beer.

As for the pool, I pee before I get in and don't have a problem for the 30-45 minutes I'm in there. I assume the manatees... er, elderly among the other swimmers are leaking their fare share, but I like to imagine it's not a significant quantity.

Just when I thought I was getting over my disdain for swim training, TriAu - even if just trolling - has reminded me of yet another reason to hate it more than biking or running. Regardless of how many times I piddle in a day, it's never once been in a pool. I'm just not important enough to disregard fundamental human hygiene.
