PT Update

Had my body analysis this afternoon and now have a solid plan to recover and get back to running and biking
The diagnosis was that my hip flexors, especially the left, are very inflexible to the point where my his do not act like a hinge. As a result I have Ben using my lower back to compensate whenever I bend, twist, walk, run, pedal, screw, or move in general. My posture stinks and I need to relearn how to do everything the proper way. Before that can happen I have to loosen the hips. My Physical Therapist was awesome. She stretched my in ways I would have never thought of and educated me as to why everything was happening. I have three appointments in the next 8 days. She also said I could stretch as many times a day as I would like. She gave me three basic stretches.

1. A proper hamstring stretch using the second step of a staircase and keeping a straight back.
2. A quad and hip flexor stretch using a chair. This one is awesome.
3. A hip external rotator stretch. She commented that my inability to do this was as bad as she had ever seen. I didn't expect to hear that.

I asked her if starting to run again by Jan.1 was a possibility if I stretched religiously until then. She said it was possible but not probable. I told her I would have it flexible by then and I would be able to run Boston in April. She was pumped.

On a side note, Mario Andretti was two tables away from me during the last 10 minutes of my rehab. Very cool.

Mario Andretti would a sure been proud the way is was toolin' when I passed that crowd comin' out the door and headin' toward me at a trot...

Sounds like a plan! A good PT is worth their weight in gold.

Great news! Your 1st sentence alone was a relief to read.
Hey, if you see Mario again be sure to challenge him to see who can hold the longest plank in the waiting room. I've heard that guy's as competitive as most triathletes ;)

So. Can it be long before there's a 50 Days of Stretching Challenge?!

Great to hear Garen... Can't keep a good man down!

Congrats, go get'm

:) I love my future job.

That's outstanding!

That's awesome news, you will be back to running in no time. Way cool about Mario Andretti too!
And BTW, you are far far from alone in the hip department. Most of the folks I work with as a trainer cannot do a proper squat. It's amazing how tight the modern human's hip flexors have become.

Thanks all. I am excited. Mario lives about 1 mile from me and I have never seen him in person. I have seen his blue ferrari every now and then.

If you do end up taking more time off, it isn't that bad. I took almost two years off between season 2 and 3 when I had my baby. It can be done.

I am so happy to hear good news, Garen! I have no doubt you will do everythng you set out to.

Thanks HC and I know you are correct. It is just that my dad is getting to the point where travel is soon going to be impossible and he and I always go to Boston together. It is too special to not try everything I can to make it happen.

Great news and thanks for sharing, not only your good news, but also some of the stretches...I know I could use more flexible hips! Best of luck in the rehab and your goal to run Boston.

Great to hear that things are improving and that you have a definite path to follow.

Finding a good PT is amazing...
I wish I had more money to go to mine.. I understand so much more now about myself....
even things I don't want to know.
I may have posted this already but apparently my body does not know it's place in the universe. It explains so much about me.

Coming into PT school I thought I was doing OK, I've since found a list of things to work on.
