GREAT GOBBLER CHALLENGE 2011

BACK BY VERY LITTLE DEMAND

This is Running Season. In my neck of the woods, it seems there are 2 local races per weekend from October to mid-December. Considering this, I believe there is no better time than now to start a Running Challenge.

There will be two separate challenges. One will be the Great Gobbler Challenge. This challenge will be to see who can accumulate the most miles from November 15th to November 30th (16 Days). The winner will receive the Great Gobbler Trophy (current held by last year's winner - Snailmale). Of course, the amounts will be based on the honor system (just a plastic trophy folks). Race distance amounts WILL BE INCLUDED. This means anyone with a remaining Marathon / Ironman could receive an advantage IF YOU CAN GET UP AND RUN THE NEXT MORNING. The one last factor of this challenge is that you MUST run at least one mile every day. I doubt this will be an issue.

I'LL ASK SNAILMALE TO POST A PIC SO EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE WORKING TOWARDS.

The second event will be the Turkey Run Challenge. This challenge will be for the mortals amongst us (for which I'll be included). The goal is to reach 50 miles (~80K) between November 15th and November 30th (16 Days). If you run a 5K per day, you will hit the target. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RUN EVERYDAY FOR THIS CHALLENGE. The award for this challenge is comradery and a sense of accomplishment (less material but equally valuable).

YOU MUST STATE WHICH CHALLENGE YOU'RE PARTICIPATING IN FOR YOUR FIRST POST. You can transition from the Great Gobbler Challenge to the Turkey Run Challenge but not vice versa. If you arrive late to challenge, you can participate in the Turkey Run Challenge and put up as much mileage as you like (maybe even eclipse the eventual Great Gobbler champion just to show off).

The reason I combine both challenges is because I want the newbies/mere mortals to benefit from what the veterans/studs offer in advice. I recommend (but don't require) everyone list their workouts. I've benefited greatly by what I've learned from some of my DailyMile friends by viewing distances/effort/speed. You may help out a fellow Trifueler.

If any issues present themselves based on your comments, I'll edit the rules above. Please check back between now and the beginning of the challenge to make sure you know the final rules.

KrazyFranco graciously created a webdoc last tear that allows us to track the totals in a spreadsheet format. I'm attaching the link below. Just click on the link and input your numbers. No saving is required.

HAVE FUN EVERYBODY

I'm in for the Great Gobbler Challenge! Sounds fun...

I am in for the Turkey Run Challenge.
Running the Philly Marathon on Nov. 20 and there is no way I am running the day or two after it.

Thanks for organizing this again AT.

Woohoo! Here's the wee bird we're after:

(pumpkin pie slice for reference only... no pie will be shipped to the winner)

It will be an honour to return & defend last year's oh-so-close win (winking at you, TryScott!), and I've gotta warn all y'all: I'll be running like a turkey chased by hatchet-wielding pilgrims. Come to think of it, that about describes my form...

Looking fwd to it!

S.

BTW, Garen - you must be on the taper doorstep: how's everything been feeling in the lead-up?

I'm in again. I'll start with the Great Gobbler. I've definitely been running more this year.

Thanks for asking. The first two weeks were tough, but am running decently. I have never attempted a race so soon after finishing an IM. The IM left me feeling like I trained for a marathon that I didn't run. So it is time to run it. Leaning toward enjoying myself rather than racing it, but will ultimately decide that day.

Looking forward to this challenge for some motivation.

I am going to try the Turkey Challenge this year. I think I can make the 80K...

I'm in...training for some spring 100 milers.

Thanks to whomever the kind person was that updated the spreadsheet. We still have more than a week until this starts so there is still time to declare your intentions. It's a fun for all levels of runners and gives you a sure way to burn off those Thanksgiving calories. :)

OK folks. Just a reminder to the "Great Gobbler" participants that tomorrow is the beginning of 16 days of running for you. You must at least log a mile a day beginning Tuesday. I love this challenge. Not only is it the intersection of the holidays and running season BUT this is one of the few times we, as competitors, get to compete with one another and share first hand in a specific accomplishment. Good luck to everyone.

I want to issue the same note of caution as I did last year. Running without "off" days can take a toll on your body. Even if you're doing low mileage and not competing for the trophy, be smart. If you develop a nagging injury, don't push it. We had several folks have to drop out last year. There is no shame in it and is the prudent thing to do.

For those that still haven't signed up and are on the fence, I say use this as a last opportunity to put in some solid mileage going into the offseason (if you have an offseason). It's a fun way to keep each of us accountable AND build some base your competition may not be building.

Bon Chance.

I'm laying here with my legs propped up on ice blocks, getting ready for tomorrow! (I kid... I'll be off to a gentle start after the weekend's Vertical Mile run with my club. Good fun, but wow the calfs (PoC, a ruling on this please: is it calfs or calves?) are deadsville)

The calfs/calves woke up to a beautiful autumn morning, and I couldn't resist!
On the chart with 7 miles this a.m.
... and so it begins...

5 mile sufferfest in muggy mid-70s. That would have felt awesome in mid-August but it just sucks in mid-November.

Holy Humphries Snail. You're in for the win, eh?

Started off with a fiver today. legs a bit grumpy from this weekends fun. (6 Friday, 11 Saturday, 20 Sunday)

Yesterday I had to choose between a run and a bike ride. I chose the bike ride because the weather was just too nice....well nice for November 15th. I will run today!!!
Holy Humphries Snail. You're in for the win, eh?
Ha - I think I played my cards too soon! 3.5 today.
Now if Anton pulls off another weekend like the past one, I'm predicting this will blow wide open!

;p

*Sigh* still waiting for the snow to melt off the roads, with any luck I can run Saturday. If not I will have to get on the treadmill.

Great work everybody. It was about 48 at 3pm today. I'm loving this weather.

A very easy two today. Supposed to be off but wanted to be sporty and do the whole 16 days...

Take it to em Anton. It's good to see you be healthy for so long. I forgot how much mileage you throw down. I hope I didn't just mess up a perfect game just now. :)

+1 to that!

It was one of Those Days this morning: clear air, about 8deg.C (about 45F?), beautiful sunrise... did an outing with my tri-club along the hilly Northshore Blvd across the top of Hamilton's harbour, at the far-west corner of Lake Ontario. It's hard to imagine that in a few short weeks we'll be wearing YakTrax and frost moustaches.

GG just came along at the right time. I'm just making deposits in the mileage bank...

I have amended my posting of 21 miles yesterday up to 24. My wife was running a local 5k last night and I was volunteering as a course Marshall. "Run Under The Lights" is a race going through one of those big holiday light displays for 5k. Had to get there early so I and several others jogged the course before we had to be on station...
My legs were stiff before the run but felt fine after and this morning are in good shape! I've done recovery bike rides after after a long run, but it's been probably 25 years since I have done a recovery run.

I got in a beautiful run this morning around Tanglewood Park (about a mile from my house). The decorations are up for the 5 mile "Festival of Lights" on a side road that is blocked off during the day. The sun was just over the horizon. There were yellow/green/orange leaves on the ground and it was ~44 degrees. The little calves in a side field were bouncing around and being silly. I guess the forties feel good when you wear leather year round. :)

It was just one of those days when the beauty of the "norm" just slaps you in the face. It's great to be a runner. I feel sorry for all the folks that miss out on stuff like this.

Looking good everybody. At Anton's pace, we're gonna have to take a crowbar to his knees (Nancy Kerigan style) to level the field. CAN HE KEEP IT UP??

Wasn't there something in the rules about needing to round down our entries to the nearest 10s? That might help keep him under control ;)

6 this afternoon. I'm cooked. My third 50 mile week in a row. Now a low volume week...yea! Only 30 miles in the coming week so y'all will have a chance to catch up!

I'm in on the Turkey Run, if it's not too late. Did 4.65 on Thurday the 17th and 8.16 on Sunday the 20th.

Welcome Tadedge!

It's never too late for the Turkey Run challenge. Welcome mon ami.

Finally I am on the board. I just got my treadmill back and I was able to run 10K on it today! Yay!

I managed to squeak in another 10K after my bike ride yesterday.

I hope all of our American friends had a great T'day... now stay safe out in the malls today!
Outside of New Mexico/west Texas, looks like fairly dry conditions for a good run?!

Another 10K on the treadmill. Caught up on some good 80s TV!

HOW DID I MISS THIS!! I'm in for Great Gobbler. I'm not near my running ledger now (home for the holiday) but I'll have a total mileage for 11/16-11/22 when I get back (there's one 20 miler in there). Can I get credit for vertical gain too?!

11/23 - 14
11/24 - 10
11/25 - 6 (played a game of tackle football that should count for 30)

Anton - so glad to hear you're back, which 100s are you gearing up for?

Glad to see you in, chekmarks... we need help keeping up with Anton, he's running like a man possessed! I've updated the spreadsheet (see the first post for the link) - not sure if it calculates verticals(!) but you can use your discretion ;)

I was surprised to not see you join too. If you haven't missed a run since the 15th, you're in like Flynn. Good luck.

Just an easy 2 miles today to stay streaky. Really I should be off as I'm past my scheduled mileage for the week. Maybe tomorrow.
I'm planning on several 100s for spring. The NJ ultra festival 100. Hampton Rhodes 24 hour. Catoctin 100 and back to NJ for Three Days in the Park.

Halfway there. A painful 10K today.
Halfway there. A painful 10K today.
Whoa - too much mileage/time for a day's rest? This is meant to be fun, not harmful!

Few days off in there for me- sore i.t. band so back into the Turkey Challenge with 3 travel days in a week and another tomorrow. But the big news is I just bought the best trail running house in Manitou. Lots of runner parties tba. Starting MLK day weekend I think.

Anton, you are my superhero!

LOL. It's not as bad as it sounds. I am used to running 9K a day. The pain is not from overworking the body. My 10K today wasn't as painful. Just wet and unpleasant.

catwood - congrats on the house, consider me jealous.

A mind-numbingly boring 10K on the treadmill. But Yay, just a few more.

Hell,I'm just a runner....YOU own a house in Manitou! The warm hearted happy for you envy I feel knows no bounds...

It was a good "run" Catwood (pun intended). Congrats on the new digs.

OK. I hit 50 this morning.

Who else is gonna make it? Looks like Chekmarks / Anton / Snailmale are all pushing the limit on the GGC. Can't wait to see the ridiculous mileage they end up posting.

The challenge end tomorrow.

You've done it the hard way but good gravy you've been on fire recently. You look like a GGC competitor with that mileage (meterage??)
