Snail's 1st marathon - BQed... but 23 days too late!

And it turns out I won in my battle with the bottle (and I'm not even alcoholic)(more in )

In a nutshell: had a great time, finished in 3:34:15, learned lots, rocked the trifuel hat, came through the 42.2 virtually unscathed - especially if one ignores that I walked like a cowboy for the first couple of hours afterwards. Most everything went according to plan (including my pace through about 35kms!) and outside of the nasty westerly winds I can't really point to any downsides to the day. Temps were on the cool side - just nosing above 10C. - the threatened rain held off, the water and gatorade were flowing from the well-staffed & friendly aid stations, I've put on nearly five pounds in the last five days celebrating, and I am already looking forward to next season!

Thank you everyone here @ trifuel for your incredibly helpful words of wisdom that gave me the courage to attempt what I categorically knew was out of the question just a few short years ago.

That was the scotiabank one wasn't it?! I was in that too, but I did the 5K. I only started running races last year....got a long way to go before I can run a full marathon. Awesome job, with a great time. You will be off to Boston before you know it!

Thanks for the kudos, hamlet_cat. Yes, it was Scotiabank... I didn't see you there(!)
I'm proof positive that if you just keep at it, make the progress slow & steady, you can make improvements you'll be proud of.
Noticed your recent thread about shoes; I must say the Mizunos were a real treat - for a relatively light shoe they gave me enough protection to get through this distance. Whatever you choose for your half, just get in enough time on them beforehand to give you a sense of confidence in their feel. And enjoy the experience!

You the man Snail! Congrats on a fast time and a BQ. A few days late for this year, but plenty early for next year.

Wow, smoking time. You're going to have to change your Snail name I think. Congrats!

That's a great marathon....congrats on the BQ! Well done!

Oh no, you did it all wrong. The marathon is too hard to do well on your first one. Didn't anyone tell you that you're supposed to have a really tough marathon or two first? Then you can really appreciate a good one because it took so many tries!

Congratz anyway.

Congrats!!

Snailmale..I think I saw you run by while we were stuck on the gardiner expressway waiting to get off at Spadina. You were the one wearing the Trifuel hat...I should have known it was you.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

hahaha - we were like ships passing in the night, in a sea of runners! Sorry I missed you... you should have waved <nyuk! nyuk! nyuk!>
Which half marathon are you running? (Sunday, the 23rd?!) All the best with it! Just enjoy the learning experience, and remember to take it nice and gently early on, even when everyone else is in a big honking rush.

Base Borden has a half marathon in October. It is a difficult one, maybe not the best choice for my first. LOL. But at least I finished and we got a set of dog tags for participating! If I do another half it will probably be the scotiabank one. Now that they give away finisher's medals, I would like to get the full set; bronze, silver and gold.

Congratulations! How about a race report?!
