ITU

Question to all my fellow triathletes out there. I am reading some articles on the ITU racing scene and I am wondering how do these athletes become apart of this circuit? It seems like unlike other Triathlons that these races are strictly for the pro's no AG are allowed to race.

So how do you get on this circuit?

I just did the ITU race in edmonton, canada as an age grouper. The city has this race for the next 5 years as they did from around 2001-2007.
I don't think you have to "get on the circuit" It's just a matter registering. The ITU circuits are all over the world, I know the only one in canada is in edmonton.

hope this helps

ITU circuits from what I understand (especially the ones in europe) are by invitation only and usually reserved for just racing federations (ie country sponsored races). That was a while ago though, so times probably have changed since then.

when they race the ITU event in Sydney they also have an age group race that you can apply to enter and from memory i think you need to submit a time for a recently completed event as a general qualification and then it is selected by a lottery. great for the average person as it is held on the steps of the opera house and your ride over the sydney harbour bridge.

I used to race ITU. In the US, you have to get a pro card (for the draft-legal races). Then you just email the elite liaison at USAT and tell her if you want to be on the start list for a race. USAT will then submit the names. For Continental Cups, just about everyone gets in. World Cups are usually limited to 6 names from each country (more if it's in your home country). USAT will submit the 6 names with the highest ITU points (earned from racing Continental Cups or from other World Cups) to the ITU. The ITU will pick the top X number of athletes from the points list (usually 60-90 worldwide depending on the race) and release a start list. If you're one of the names that USAT submits, you'll usually get to go.

Once you're there, numbers are assigned in descending order of points (i.e., the highest-ranked guy gets number 1) and spots on the starting pontoon are chosen in numerical order. They might call out guys individually and announce them 1-20 or so then just let everyone else hop in wherever.

Forget ITU. If you're just looking to do a draft legal race, schedule a trip in November, go volunteer this year, and do IM Florida in 2012. Fastest amateur draft legal race in the country.

wait for it.... and... sooner?
