Not sure if i have this in the right part of the forum so my apologies if i choose an incorrect sport
My question is regarding delving into ocean swimming and specifically the Mooloolaba triathlon if anybody has done it. Anyways, I just recently finishing my first triathlon. It was the San Diego International triathlon so it was just under an Olympic - 1k swim, 30k bike and 10k run. The race went better than I could have expected, great time versus my expectations and more important I felt strong right to the end. I want to do another Tri next year and like to use these adventures as a reason to travel to some places I have always wanted so I have centred around the Mooloolaba Triathlon in Australia (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run). I would love to do this event but my dilemma, actually anxiety, is the swimming portion which is actually in the Ocean which I have never done (The swim in San Diego was in a calm harbour). I come from a running background and swimming is by far my weakest discipline. I don't mind being slow, even finishing dead last in this event, but I don't want to put myself into the situation that the Ocean swimming will actually be a silly challenge to get involved in that could actually be dangerous for me.
I will continue to do significant swim training until the time of the event (end of March 2012) but most of this will be in the pool. I live in Ontario Canada so the first part of the next year, leading up to the Tri, we will have water that is a little to frozen to get in much swimming. I will be taking a vacation in Australia for 2 weeks before the event so I will have a little bit of time before the event to get into the water.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I always get these negatives thoughts before signing up for things, same happened with just swimming for San Diego, but I just wanted to check with others that have more experience.
Sorry for the rambling question. I hope it made sense.
