Sylvan beach Sprint + RR

I have NOT been training for fast. I have been training for long for a long time- it seems. So when my training partner said we should do this sprint tri I only agreed because it's somewhat longer than the standard sprint, and the next available OLY in my area is Sept.

We arrived early, as I like it and got to walk around a lot- check out the water which was calm, but really dirty. This is in an area with lots of refineries one can see driving up and in the distance. I was glad to come out of the water without an extra appendage, and it didn't build my confidence when I saw the big dead fish lying dead at the swim finish. blech! It was my first run in race- I LIKED it. I lined up in the front of my wave which was ALL women, clydesdales, athenas, relays, and stragglers, I guess. I hit some traffic and the bouys were set up in a way that made it difficult to distinguish b/t the going out bouys and the coming back bouys, so I got off course a little, but whatever.
1000m swim: 20:20 (not my best swim :(...) 3rd in my AG

T1: 1:02 (happy with this!)

Bike: I liked the course. It was good freeway ride, fast, a couple "hills", I went back and forth with a girl who I know is super fast, so I felt confident, until she said she was stung by a jellyfish in the swim and she's "deathly allergic".
18mi bike: 50:44 2nd in AG (22mph) VERY happy with THIS!

T2: 1:15 (such a noob error- I went to the wrong rack twice before I found my spot, DOH!)

Run: I felt good throughout. I wanted to push, but I wasn't sure how hard for 5 mi. I took in a gel at 11mi on the bike and I didn't know if it would last through the run. I looked at my watch for approximate splits at each mi marker and I kept getting faster (Yippee!) I had my sights on a girl wearing a IM canada jersey from the start of the run (in my AG). At a 1/4 mi to the finish I picked it up and passed her, but she was right on my tail. When I took the last turn before the finish line, I heard footsteps behind me, and thought "OH. NO. YOU. DON'T!" and sprinted to the finish. She finished 1 second behind me WOO!HOO!
5mi run: 39:30 4th in AG (8:02 avg) VERY happy with THIS!

Finish time: 1:52:53 2nd AG :)

Nice report, and it was great to see you at the race!

Please tell me you raced a sprint with your Ironman swim cap, Ironman Arizona jersey, and ran in your Ironman K-Swiss. Because that would be awesome.

No, I think I had my Galveston 70.3 race cap on.
I don't know why I feel weird wearing my IM clothes to races. Maybe it's all YOUR comments about the show-offiness at sprints...now I'm self conscious about it ;)

I'M IN YOUR HEAD! Really, if you wear Ironman Finisher-branded stuff to a sprint, you're a dork. (Tattoos excluded)

Great report...I have a similar situation this weekend with a Sprint in Boulder (at elevation and I'm a flatlander) with little speed work focus leading up. I only hope I can come close to your times!

You ride a bike like a possessed woman. Gracious. Well done Jtrimom.

I'm guessing tapers are shorter for a Sprint?? :)

thank you! honestly, I didn't taper at all...hmmm, maybe some post race tapering is in order, can we call it the recotaper?

By all means. Your husband won't know what hit him.

Sweet times!

(You wear that IM stuff wherever the hell you want; you earned it!)

Congrats!
Good for me you are not local!

Go speedy!

Nice race Sharon. That will pump you up for the next few weeks of training.
