This is Running Season. In my neck of the woods, it seems there are 2 local races per weekend from October to mid-December. Considering this, I believe there is no better time than now to start a Running Challenge.
There will be two separate challenges. One will be the Great Gobbler Challenge. This challenge will be to see who can accumulate the most miles from November 15th to November 30th (16 Days). The winner will receive the Great Gobbler Trophy. I haven't purchased this yet but expect it to look similar to the embedded link below. Of course, the amounts will be based on the honor system (just a plastic trophy folks). Race distance amounts WILL BE INCLUDED. This means anyone with a remaining Marathon / Ironman could receive an advantage IF YOU CAN GET UP AND RUN THE NEXT MORNING. The one last factor of this challenge is that you MUST run at least one mile every day. I doubt this will be an issue.

The second event will be the Turkey Run Challenge. This challenge will be for the mortals amongst us (for which I'll be included). The goal is to reach 50 miles (~80K) between November 15th and November 30th (16 Days). If you run a 5K per day, you will hit the target. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RUN EVERYDAY FOR THIS CHALLENGE. The award for this challenge is comradery and a sense of accomplishment (less material but equally valuable).
YOU MUST STATE WHICH CHALLENGE YOU'RE PARTICIPATING IN FOR YOUR FIRST POST. You can transition from the Great Gobbler Challenge to the Turkey Run Challenge but not vice versa. If you arrive late to challenge, you can participate in the Turkey Run Challenge and put up as much mileage as you like (maybe even eclipse the eventual Great Gobbler champion just to show off).
The reason I combine both challenges is because I want the newbies/mere mortals to benefit from what the veterans/studs offer in advice. I recommend (but don't require) everyone list their workouts. I've benefited greatly by what I've learned from some of my DailyMile friends by viewing distances/effort/speed. You may help out a fellow Trifueler.
If any issues present themselves based on your comments, I'll edit the rules above. Please check back between now and the beginning of the challenge to make sure you know the final rules.
KrazyFranco graciously created a webdoc that allows us to track the totals in a spreadsheet format. I'm attaching the link below. Just click on the link and input your numbers. No saving is required.

Sorry I missed this but I have been pretty busy and a slacker.
Good luck to everybody as this winds down.
Maybe there will be a December Running challenge posted soon! ;-)

Thanks AT. It is always fun to take part in a fitness challenge. Maybe a "31 days of running in the New Year challenge for January". Think about it.
WOW. I know we ran every day last November and I got in really good running shape. I even set most of my standing PRs. It's a slippery slope though as evidenced by all the drop-outs from injury. Plus, running in January is alot different than November. I'm a big whiner though. In truth, I'd probably do it. :)
5 miles today! Outside, in the mud. I know I look like an underachiever, but I am just a bit nervous about pushing my weekly mileage. Running 1 mile a day, extends in quite a bit, so I just want to make sure I can finish the challenge!
Underachiever my tail. You're still running. Like I said above, we did this last year for November and I never respected how useful an off day is every once in a while until that challenge. It's tough. You got the balance right for you. If I do consistent runs without off days, I don't do speedwork and shorten my long days. Pretty much, it's a ton of base training that's very simular distance and speed. It seems like the best way to beat the injury bug and keep in the challenge.

LOL! I wonder why I keep getting referred to as Helmet_cat, instead of Hamlet_cat. I get this picture of myself in the bike leg with a cat on my head.
For today, the last day, I did 1 mile, although it was more like a mini tempo run. Again, I was testing to see how fast I could run on the treadmill without falling off. This challenge has proven to be quite useful to test some of my skills, I don't think I would have even considered running on a treadmill before. It seemed like the easiest way to put in a mile after spin class. So thanks AT for starting up this challenge!

Got in one more run because it was on my schedule. No biggie. Just a moderate 8:42 pace while dancing between the rain drops.
I've had fun everybody. If you need another obstacle, flip over to Garen's December Bike Challenge. I'll check out the scores for the Great Gobbler and see who I'm sending the trophy to.

Woops. Sorry about that. It's funny how the mind sees what it wants to see. I guess since we wear helmets in our sport it's a natural assumption. I actually had to read the above reply about 5 times to see what I was doing wrong. I was thinking, "What's the problem, that's the same word". Ha. Hamlet_cat is much more sophisticated. :)

It looks like Snail_Male is just a single skinny mile in front of Tryscott. I'm gonna hold off on proclaiming a winner until after the day is done just in case somebody gets a pre-midnight urge.

As I filled in the chart, the thought of running 1.x miles just to tie Snail_male was there. Major drawback will be taking another shower. If I ever stop training, Dial is going to see a big reduction in their body wash sales.

Do it, man, do it! Just jog along shirtless, stay cool, & save the soap for another time. You have another seven hours as of right now. Surely that's just- what is it Americans like to measure everything by? - a football field or something like that, every hour, isn't it?!
Then we can have a runoff. Wait - you're the marathon animal, not me (yet) I think I may need to concede. I'm good with that. In good company's good enough for me. If nothing else, do it for AT, so he can save on shipping(!)
a pleasant 7 today and that

That's ok. At first I thought it was a typo, and then it kept on happening. LOL. Its just funny because I kept envisioning me riding a long with a cat on my head!

OK. I'm calling it. This year's Great Gobbler Champion is Snail_Male. The trophy just showed up at my house and is ready to go after I make some adjustments to it. I wasn't able to find a solid traveling trophy so I'm gonna improvise to give it a simular feel (you'll see when you get it). It looks somewhat simular to what I posted in the initial post. I'll have pictures soon.
Congrats to all participants. Maybe next year you will be the Great Gobbler Champion and the trophy will make it's way to your neck of the woods.
Congrats snail-male! And
Congrats snail-male! And congrats to all of you runners who trotted these last two weeks!
It was a good jump-start for me...thanks AT :)
Congrats all!

AT: Thanks so much for the challenge. It was great to have some extra motivation. Congrats to all the runners. Happy holidays to you all!
Thanks for pushing me,
Thanks for pushing me, everyone, and thanks, AT, for arranging this. It was a great workout and I really appreciated being able to draw out the season a bit longer this way. I see TryScott & I stopped just shy of the magic 100 - there's a juicy carrot for next year's group!
I'm in for next year! Thanks
I'm in for next year! Thanks guys for the motivations. My 'season was over' but now I'm gearing for a local 10k this weekend and I think there is a good chance I'll PR do some late season speed work!
