***GREAT GOBBLER & TURKEY RUN CHALLENGE***

This is Running Season. In my neck of the woods, it seems there are 2 local races per weekend from October to mid-December. Considering this, I believe there is no better time than now to start a Running Challenge.

There will be two separate challenges. One will be the Great Gobbler Challenge. This challenge will be to see who can accumulate the most miles from November 15th to November 30th (16 Days). The winner will receive the Great Gobbler Trophy. I haven't purchased this yet but expect it to look similar to the embedded link below. Of course, the amounts will be based on the honor system (just a plastic trophy folks). Race distance amounts WILL BE INCLUDED. This means anyone with a remaining Marathon / Ironman could receive an advantage IF YOU CAN GET UP AND RUN THE NEXT MORNING. The one last factor of this challenge is that you MUST run at least one mile every day. I doubt this will be an issue.

The second event will be the Turkey Run Challenge. This challenge will be for the mortals amongst us (for which I'll be included). The goal is to reach 50 miles (~80K) between November 15th and November 30th (16 Days). If you run a 5K per day, you will hit the target. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RUN EVERYDAY FOR THIS CHALLENGE. The award for this challenge is comradery and a sense of accomplishment (less material but equally valuable).

YOU MUST STATE WHICH CHALLENGE YOU'RE PARTICIPATING IN FOR YOUR FIRST POST. You can transition from the Great Gobbler Challenge to the Turkey Run Challenge but not vice versa. If you arrive late to challenge, you can participate in the Turkey Run Challenge and put up as much mileage as you like (maybe even eclipse the eventual Great Gobbler champion just to show off).

The reason I combine both challenges is because I want the newbies/mere mortals to benefit from what the veterans/studs offer in advice. I recommend (but don't require) everyone list their workouts. I've benefited greatly by what I've learned from some of my DailyMile friends by viewing distances/effort/speed. You may help out a fellow Trifueler.

If any issues present themselves based on your comments, I'll edit the rules above. Please check back between now and the beginning of the challenge to make sure you know the final rules.

KrazyFranco graciously created a webdoc that allows us to track the totals in a spreadsheet format. I'm attaching the link below. Just click on the link and input your numbers. No saving is required.

HAVE FUN EVERYBODY

Had a triumphant 6 miler last night after having a tight calf from too many bridge repeats last week. Glad to be back on the bandwagon!
Does a 72-mile bike ride in the hills count towards anything?
Just a talley on your personal odometer. :)

Garmin is at home, so I might be off by a mile or so on these.
Friday - missed lunch run and did 5 miles after work
Saturday - 4.5 miles after bike
Sunday - 11.5 miles with group
Monday - 5 miles before work

I had a feeling you would say that. I ran 6 this morning :)

MOnday Nov 22! 5 miles! It is possible that there is a pattern developing.

3.5 tonight. Uncharacteristically warm for this time of year - I got to run in just shorts & a 't' again!

ham_cat: good consistency!

Track day. It was WAY too warm for a late November morning. What's the dealio?? I did 5X1000M at 6:33, 6:29, 6:46, 6:41, 6:42 (that's per mile pace by the way). Out a little fast and hit a wall when I tried to put more into the last two. Warm-up and Cool-down covered the rest of the mileage. I guess I'm ready to do a turkey trot and then get drunk off wine with the family as is the tradition.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYBODY. Don't forget to keep the odometer spinning while vacating.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are like clockwork. 6 miles. 43 minutes.

Tuesday November 23rd. 1.25 miles and I just entered a new age group. Yay.

Happy Birthday!

Love your dedication, you must be struggling to find time to run and yet you still do even if it's only 1 mile. Awesome!

Thanks! I am 40 now, I jumped into a new age category. I am so happy that I am still able to train and race. I have friends that used to do triathlons but they have all stopped doing them now for various reasons. GGC is a good challenge for me, I don't usually do recovery runs, so I am using the 1 milers for that! I have a 5K on Dec 4th, so maybe they will pay off!

I used to have a cat named Hamlet. Hence the name.

Short recovery run yesterday. I think it was ~9min per mile pace. The runs at that pace on a nice day are fun.

Planned on 4 miles, but 100m before getting back I ran into this cool old guy and we talked about marathons and ironmans. Would of gone with him for his entire 8+ miles if I didn't have to get ready for work. Arg.

11/24 - 4.7 miles

TR
8 miles this morning, dark and cold and i took a new route.
Love my head lamp.

Wednesday Nov 24th. Had to choose between a swim and a run. Because of the GGC, I chose the run: 3.7 miles.

Cooking, cleaning. No time to get out to a race, but did just get back from a 4 miler after the turkey was put in the oven...

I did the family 8K Turkey Trot. I ended up at a 6:50 pace despite the fact that I haven't trained much and my knee feels like crap. I can live with that. Being able to be happy with a pace despite injury is a great feeling. It's so emancipating. I was just enjoying the run. Be happy with your health trifuelers. It's a greater asset than you would ever believe. Many folks would pay a kings randsom to do what we do.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL.

Us "Canucks" ate our turkey already. But Happy thanksgiving, to our neighbors down below! Today I did a 1 mile "see how fast I can run on a treadmill without falling off" run. Apparently not that fast.

I did a turkey trot this morning. Got a modern day PR. 23 minutes for 5k. That is the fastest since my sub 17 minute finishes in high school. I need to work on pace.
1 mile-6:35 Holy moly slow down Scott
2 mile-7:22 That's a bit better
3 mile-8:09 Just held on
.1-6:30 pace nice kick.

Again Pacing. But I'm pretty pumped none-the-less.

Friday November ? I did 1 mile on the treadmill again. The good news is I could run 6.2 mph without falling off...and no bike leg. Yay. I keep forgetting to bring my headphones to the gym though, I forgot how boring it is to run on a treadmill.

8.2 into work again today. With tomorrow being our tri club's Vertical Mile, I can see it being my last significant day. I'm guessing I'll need the final three days for brief recovery runs! It's been fun. And I won't mind reverting back to 4x week... ;)

1 mile today. Didn't really want to do it, but the dog kept giving me a look.
46 total.

Just a little recovery run this morning. It's cold out there. Brrrrrrr.
And I won't mind reverting back to 4x week... ;)
But you're putting up awesome numbers. Keep up the good work. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thursday: 2 mile trot, including a Bloody Mary and donut
Saturday: 3 miles
Total run miles: 26
Total bike miles: 172. Maybe I should have entered a Biking Turkey Challenge :)

Good thing I'm doing back-to-back long runs starting tomorrow!

Reverse brick today...10 miler followed by 20 miles on the single speed (44x17) MTB. Brutal headwind on the way home. It cooked me.

Thanks, AT. I managed to complete a truncated version of my club's Vertical Mile today. I'll call it the Vertical Kilo as I arrived late, and skipped a few staircases. Still totalled 11.2 miles on the ground. I may just soft peddle the next few days. Originally had 100 miles as a goal, but now 90 is looking better! My thanksgiving is that I can even be in the mix doing this with y'all.

There are no words for this but awesome. How did you run w/o spilling the drink? ;)

Thanksgiving - 5 miles
Friday - 3.5
Saturday - 13 - Half marathon goal was 6:25 pace for a sub 1:25. Result was 1:24:30. Right on 6:25 avg pace and faster half than 2 weeks ago by 2:23.

Congrats on the PR. You're one fast dude.

A 1:24! That is great.

4 miles this morning.
50 total.

At, 6 of my friends and I will be in the 2nd row of the balcony, of a renovated 1930's movie theater for the Avetts. Can't wait.

Out early and moved around a bit...3 miles.
Ttd: 56

Saturday November 27th? I did 5 miles. I bit the bullet and tried an interval run on a treadmill. Crazy, but I did it. Today my feet hurt but I will get out for my 1 miler!

Very carefully, of course. No party fouls were committed :)

And thanks to a fantastically cool 14-miler in the woods this morning, I'm only 10-miles away from our goal!

Sounds like a cool venue. Should be awesome.

Sunday nov 28th. Squeezed in a mile!

GGC - 2.1 miles today. After the last few days my calves feel like they were part of a medical experiment, so I was happy to take up my wife on her offer to "jog" together.

ttd: 88.8

9.1 yesterday afternoon, so nice to get in a jog while there is daylight, that's a rarity now-a-days. I feel totally recovered from the pulled calf so that's nice. Got a call last night that my platlets are in need again (I'm O+ but with a rare sub-code of some sort, they have my # on speed dial [not hyperbole, they've shown me ] ) so I'm officially hanging up the running shoes on this one. Good job friends, thanks for the motivation.

Anyone doing the New York Road Runners 10k this weekend?

Nothing like waiting til the last minute. I ran 11 this morning to total 51 miles...and I'm no overachiever, so tomorrow will be a walk day :)

3 on Sunday after a bike ride. Didn't really want to, but I don't want to break the streak just because I don't feel like running.

Turkey Run

I went ahead and knocked this out on Sunday so I wouldn't think about it any more this week. Good job on the mileage everybody. Remember we have through Tuesday, November 31st to put in miles. If you're close to you goal, knock it out now.

It seems TryScott and Snail_male will be the likely winner of the Great Gobbler Challenge. Helmet Cat is also still keeping the streak alive. Considering the DNF rate, even that is incredible.

It's been fun everybody. If you want more, it looks like Garen is starting his cycling challenge very soon. Check out that post.

5 miles today! Outside, in the mud. I know I look like an underachiever, but I am just a bit nervous about pushing my weekly mileage. Running 1 mile a day, extends in quite a bit, so I just want to make sure I can finish the challenge!

Thanks AT. It is always fun to take part in a fitness challenge. Maybe a "31 days of running in the New Year challenge for January". Think about it.

WOW. I know we ran every day last November and I got in really good running shape. I even set most of my standing PRs. It's a slippery slope though as evidenced by all the drop-outs from injury. Plus, running in January is alot different than November. I'm a big whiner though. In truth, I'd probably do it. :)

Underachiever my tail. You're still running. Like I said above, we did this last year for November and I never respected how useful an off day is every once in a while until that challenge. It's tough. You got the balance right for you. If I do consistent runs without off days, I don't do speedwork and shorten my long days. Pretty much, it's a ton of base training that's very simular distance and speed. It seems like the best way to beat the injury bug and keep in the challenge.

4.9 today at lunch. Might do another 3 after cycling in the evening if the lightening holds off. Tempting to run twice a day Tues, Wed, and Thurs to get closer to snail_male's mileage... Nah.

Don't count me as an injury drop-out - it was a pre-existing condition :)

Nice work all!

GGC - another 2.1 tonight,
ttd: 90.9

Same route as previous, this time sans spouse. One thing I have noticed is that in needing to sneak in some runs on days I normally wouldn't means I am now running at night sometimes, which, in and of itself is fine, but here in suburbia, in the still evening air, all I get whiffs of is cigarette smoke from folks outside for their bedtime gasp, and scented dryer cloths! Yecchhhh. Another good reason to cut back to 3-4 a week, all in the early mornings!
Good job everyone; Hamlet_cat - way to keep stringing them together! TryScott, I don't know what to say, bud. How's this for full disclosure: UPDATE Nov.30: today the car goes in for service, so I may need to run in to work, but I see it's raining now and may take public transit and blah blah blah...
Whatever it is I'll be done and logged in by noon ET, no 11th hour sniping big numbers. Scout's honour. Now get out there and let's give the folks a show!

Whoa, today is the last day. For some reason I was thinking Friday was the 1st of Nov. Ran 6 to wrap it up.
