***GREAT GOBBLER & TURKEY RUN CHALLENGE***

This is Running Season. In my neck of the woods, it seems there are 2 local races per weekend from October to mid-December. Considering this, I believe there is no better time than now to start a Running Challenge.

There will be two separate challenges. One will be the Great Gobbler Challenge. This challenge will be to see who can accumulate the most miles from November 15th to November 30th (16 Days). The winner will receive the Great Gobbler Trophy. I haven't purchased this yet but expect it to look similar to the embedded link below. Of course, the amounts will be based on the honor system (just a plastic trophy folks). Race distance amounts WILL BE INCLUDED. This means anyone with a remaining Marathon / Ironman could receive an advantage IF YOU CAN GET UP AND RUN THE NEXT MORNING. The one last factor of this challenge is that you MUST run at least one mile every day. I doubt this will be an issue.

The second event will be the Turkey Run Challenge. This challenge will be for the mortals amongst us (for which I'll be included). The goal is to reach 50 miles (~80K) between November 15th and November 30th (16 Days). If you run a 5K per day, you will hit the target. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RUN EVERYDAY FOR THIS CHALLENGE. The award for this challenge is comradery and a sense of accomplishment (less material but equally valuable).

YOU MUST STATE WHICH CHALLENGE YOU'RE PARTICIPATING IN FOR YOUR FIRST POST. You can transition from the Great Gobbler Challenge to the Turkey Run Challenge but not vice versa. If you arrive late to challenge, you can participate in the Turkey Run Challenge and put up as much mileage as you like (maybe even eclipse the eventual Great Gobbler champion just to show off).

The reason I combine both challenges is because I want the newbies/mere mortals to benefit from what the veterans/studs offer in advice. I recommend (but don't require) everyone list their workouts. I've benefited greatly by what I've learned from some of my DailyMile friends by viewing distances/effort/speed. You may help out a fellow Trifueler.

If any issues present themselves based on your comments, I'll edit the rules above. Please check back between now and the beginning of the challenge to make sure you know the final rules.

KrazyFranco graciously created a webdoc that allows us to track the totals in a spreadsheet format. I'm attaching the link below. Just click on the link and input your numbers. No saving is required.

HAVE FUN EVERYBODY

4.1 miles for me today. I did a Swim and run brick of sorts. Swam 1600 yds and then ran. My bike is getting jealous of my running shoes. :) I have a total of 7.4 miles. Having fun remembering what it was like to run everyday.
... I've got an 8K Turkey Trot too but it's just one of those fun family traditions. No big deal.
... I'll say, especially if you do it like this dude:

If your knees are acting up, you may want to check that there's good support in those turkey feet. Otherwise, don't hesitate to wear your regular running shoes instead, even though that would look silly.
Seriously, good luck with your knee holding up.

Another 8.2 miles yesterday, commuting into work. One of these days I'll get my act together & drive in a load of clothes to my locker so I can do this w/o a back pack.

OK folks. It looks like we're deep enough in to announce that there are 7 Great Gobbler Contestents:

KrazyFranco, Triath02, TryScott, helmet_cat, StephenPDennis, Catwood, Snail_male

That's a better turnout than I would have hoped for in the first attempt at this. So far, Triath02 has a narrow lead over the competition with a two day total of 17 miles (unless catwood threw down 15 mile yesterday). Keep up the good work. There is a delicate balance between distance and injury in this challenge so be careful. I liken it to drinking enough beer to have enough courage to talk to the hot girl at a party BUT to not be puking on her shoes before the end of the night.

We've got 5 Turkey Run Challengers but this number may grow if others decide to join at some point through out the contest. Currently we have the following:

Amphibious Triton (me), gfd, Rsmoylan, Anton, Wannakona

If you're lurking (viewing without posting), come on in because there's always room for more. I've added KrazyFranco's spreadsheet link to the bottom of the initial forum post so it can be easily found. It looks great and will be a big help. I've also sorted the rows to have all the individuals of each challenge grouped together.

Keep up the good work everybody.

Hey AT, I was looking at the McMillan running calculator. I entered my only tri 5k time and it calculated training paces. Will training at those paces produce the same or better time. In other words, should I enter a faster time into the calculator to improve my 5k time? I can clarify more if needed.

The theory is that being disciplined and training at those pace will improve your times. You shouldn't need to put in a faster time than your PR. When you get a new PR, then you need to input that into the calculator and new paces will be generated. You may want to input a stand alone 5K time though (or another race not in a multisport competition) since your times should be faster. If you don't have one I GUESS that you should put in a faster time than your tri 5K but it's hard to assume how much faster you would be. Some folks are only ~20secs per mile slower than a stand alone 5K. I'm personnally a solid minute per mile slower than a stand alone 5K (sadly enough).

There are some bigger studs on the thred that may have some better insight.

Ok, I'm not blaming anyone here, but today I went out to my car at lunch so I could drive to the gym where I change for running. The tire was flat. Really? How about we stop with the sabotage and focus on our own performances? Thanks.

Now I have to walk over a mile to the gym in my work shoes. I'm not afraid to log those miles.

I'd like to join too...is it too late?
Now I have to walk over a mile to the gym in my work shoes. I'm not afraid to log those miles.
Malicious intent for the Great Gobbler challenge?? Wow. Sounds like some voodoo car shaped pin cushions are being put to good use.
I'd like to join too...is it too late?
It is too late for the Great Gobbler Challenge since it requires that you run every day BUT you can join the Turkey Run Challenge. For that the goal is to run 50 miles between Nov 15 and Nov 30. You're a couple days down but since you're an ultra gal 50 should still be attainable.

Wednesday Nov 17th. 3.7 miles. Sorry about the decimals, I had to do the conversion from km. My run was 6K.
I've also sorted the rows to have all the individuals of each challenge grouped together.

Good thinking! We can probably delete the example person too :)

***DOUBLE POST!***

AT is right on. If you don't know your standalone 5k time... go run one :)

Those pace calculators are based on a past race performance. So, if my last 5k was 19:00, it is going to spit out guidelines for training paces that will make me improve based on my current fitness (...based on that 5k time).

It is not a tool that says "input your desired race time and I'll tell you how fast to train."

Does that make sense?

7 more today with 2 at race pace.
14 total.

An easy three today:
Ttd: 8

16 laps around a track beside the pool holding my son's Special Olympics swim practice. Two birds, one stone.
4 laps w/u,
8x200H/200e,
4 laps cool.
28:08 total time.

I think the 6400m rounds out to 4 miles.

Absolutely. Thanks for the clarification.

Turkey Run
7 Miles
17 Miles TOTAL

I took the day off yesterday so I could go easy on the old trick knee. This was just a moderate run at a 8:24 per mile pace. Mile 3&4 are ober hilly and I ran the last two miles sub-8. It was a beautiful morning to run. The stars were big and bright. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I feel sorry for the people that don't get out to see the stars at night / in the morning. I bet some grown ups haven't seen them since they were a kid. It's a shame.

Morning runs are the best. They set the tone for a great day. 5 this morning with my dog. He was loving life.

Avert brothers tickets for a Wilkes Barre show on sale Monday morning.

Pull the trigger. Their Myrtle Beach House of Blues concert I saw in August was the best I'd seen in ages.

Despite my car trouble, I still made 4.9 miles yesterday at lunch (just 2 hours late). 6 with my usual Tues/Thurs group this morning.

A few steps past 9kms = 5.6 miles

Thursday Nov 18th. 30minutes of aqua-jogging. Hmmm..Its a 20 m pool and I did 53 laps halfway through one lane and around the wading pool which I estimate to be 30m a lap. So I think 54x30m=1620m which is about 1 mile. I hope I can count aqua-jogging. It doesn't sound like much, but it actually felt like I got a good workout, and still meets the requirements of the GGC!

8 on Wednesday (including intervals) and 5 at easy pace today.

30 on the week.

I'll allow it.

6 today on an empty canal towpath...just beautiful.

3.2 today. Did some fartleks and hit sub 7 at times. Just missed the rain, ice, snow mix. Is it spring yet?

Announcing my resignation from the GGC. The knee was acting up and I don't want to push it. I will keep watching the events with interest.

As long as you save room for pie. :)

+1. Sorry to hear but this is definately a competition of attrition. Longevity is more important. I hope everyone will access their health and not push it too far.

I had my 4 month function testing for my Bionic Leg (aka surgically repaired knee) on Tuesday. Biodex, leg press, single leg hop for distance, and single leg hop for height. I pushed pretty hard and got good results but it has been sore the last few days :)

I'll go for the golden turkey next year!

If I did the hopping around you're describing I'd be on the sidelines myself. I hope it's a good year for repair, krazyfranco; keep us in the loop on your progress.

As I often tell my family, post-workout, I'm "winning the lottery" every day (ie. no aches or pains) and for that I am truly thankful.

8.2 miles into work again.

OK, then I'm in for the Turkey Run! I've run 15 painful miles this week. Detox is not fun...

Friday November 19th: 1 mile!

0 miles today.

There is always room for pie, if i need to i will run 50 more for the pie.

+1 to the pie.
No matter what happens, there's a homemade pumpkin pie in the freezer with my name on it for December 1st!

3 miles today... now to traipse around the zoo with the family.

2 easy this morning before volunteering at a race: Moon Set, Venus, shooting stars, an azure and red sun rise....just beautiful.

Turkey Run
12 Miles
29 Miles TOTAL

My normal Saturday long run. Nice morning for a run. It was chilly at first but warmed up pretty quick. I averaged 8:26 and the last 3 miles were 8:02. Not as fast at the end as I wanted but with only 2 weeks left, I'm just trying not to do TOO much.

2 miles today.
21 total.
Off to a soccer game then on to Philly, with my dad, for my packet and dinner at Reading Terminal Market. I am so excited to get going I am having trouble sitting still.

Saturday November 20th. 5 miles. By myself, even better.

Good luck, Garen, and have a great time!

Sunday morning run, around 40s outside, fog, a little drizzling rain, no people, no cars, no wind, calm, relaxing, just a very nice 12 mile run. I love it!

I hear you, Konstantin! 10.2 miles for me; it was a beautiful morning for it, trying to go slow @ long run pace per MacMillan's Running Calculator, but it was hard to rein it in! Ended up around 5.04/km when it "should've been" more like 5:15. I'll chalk it up as a GPH - Good Problem to Have.
ttd: 47.5

26.2 this morning. 45 total. I think I can get another 5 in by the end of the month. Although, the idea of running right now makes me want to be sick.

18 today...

Chapeau Garen! Off to read your report...

Turkey Run
3 Miles
32 Miles TOTAL

Just a recovery run. Not much to say. Congrats Garen. Need to read the race report but I'm sure it was great. Keep up the good work everybody.

Does a 72-mile bike ride in the hills count towards anything?

It was a rest day for me. Sunday Nov 21rst. 1 Mile!
