Benefits of yoga?

Hey everyone,

I have been doing the p90x yoga routine for a while and its getting a little boring, even though it kicks my butt. Anyone have any suggestions on other videos or routines?

And what exactly are the benefits of yoga and what do you have to do to get the benefits?

Thanks everyone,

Maks

i love yoga. if i had the time to do it everyday, or a few times a week, i'd probably never suffer from tight muscles or sore back/neck from office and commuting malaise. And, might never have to go to the chiropractor again, and may be free of training injuries.

i'm not sure what p90x is, sounds like some yoga for strength or with pilates thrown in.

in my view, the primary benefity of yoga is improving or maintianing overall health. i mean that in a wholistic, everything is connected kind of way. good yoga reconnects you with your body's internal strength. this improves everything you do. more specifically, you"ll strengthen your core, be more limber, relax your muscles, become more accustomed to identifying different groups of muscles and paying attention to how to relax and work them, and so on.

i think it is easy to get into a yoga class that you can benefit from, but finding a good yoga instructor who will take you to another level can be hard.

Yoga has helped me tremendously! The main reason I do it, is to keep me injury free! I had a terrible IT Band problem and doing yoga twice a week for 3-4 months, the injury slowly went away. Within 6 months is was completely gone. That may seem like a lot of time but I had the problem for over a year and half and none of the chirporators or ortheopedic surgeons offered much help.
The key for me is doing poses that allow me to open up my hip sockets and stretch my hip flexors and quads. Most yoga classes incorporate those type of postures/poses. There are also so many other poses that hit those areas. During the off season, I may only go once a week as I am not running as much but I do notice a difference so I may go back to twice a week....but definitely during tri season!

Yoga is great for me. I didn't know how to stretch myself out. Now I actually know what muscles are tight. Piriformis for example and what I need to do to actually stretch that out.
The downside is the constant reminder of how I am not a flexible person.
The strength yoga class is also good. Always nice to get feedback on your form for simple stuff like planks and side planks. Just when you thought you had it beat, it turns out you were cheating a bit...

I know the video, and can understand how it can get boring. An amazing thing about it though - is that they move you through a lot of poses so that you're more ready for a normal yoga class than you might think. Some of the names are different, but if you can get all the way through the YogaX video, you can show up at most yoga studios and hang with the intermediate class. That will alleviate some of the boredom for 2 reasons (i) its nice to do yoga in a group setting and (ii) you'll learn a little more about the poses and it will challenge you more the next time you do YogaX.

What I found is that I just feel much better after I do some yoga. Even if I only do 10-15 minutes of yoga, I will feel significantly better, especially if I was sore from some harder workouts.

Are there any good sites that show and explain different yoga poses or you have to find a class?

I've seen a few sites, and there are plenty of iphone apps or books that go into it. However, I've found it much more effective to learn from other people.

I found good footage on Youtube of poses.

This is a good place to start. Then go to youtube for Video if needed.
