I drove to Sanoma last weekend with my girlfriend to meet my folks and friends that were also racing vineman. A few months earlier I was sick of hearing people stress about the hotel and trip details so I took the liberty of reserving a bunch of rooms at a hotel in guerneville sonoma that seemed inexpensive and only a few blocks from the swim start. The hotel itself is actualy more entertaining than my race or splits so i'll get the boring stuff out of the way.
Swim: 33:24 / bike:2:36 / 1:50:30. Time 5:04:57 div 25-29
A nice river swim. Rolling hills on the bike with a few mellow climbs . The run was hilly and very hot. I didnt expect those hills to be there right off the bike. Overall, a good, fun race. I wanted a better time but dislocated my shoulder 3 weeks ago in an olympic tri and was debating even racing. A 5:04 and my body in one piece was perfect for this HIM.
One of you guys always ask nutrition stuff, and I like to learn from that stuff too: Accelerade 4:1 x2 bottles on the bike, with x2 gu's and 1/2 powerbar. Also "Thermolyte" buffered sodium supplement is amazing. I take 2 every 30-40 min and never cramp. I finally qualified for boston 2 months ago trying out these things, they're great.
Oh yeah , the "hotel." I show up with my girlfriend after 9 plus hours of driving to find 8 naked dudes laying out around a shity pool. I was happy to see the pool, but not all the penis. I walked into the lobby where an older lady/madam sat behind a desk. After I introduced myself I realized she had forgoten about the conversation we had on the phone when I asked her to tell my about the hotel and what it has to offer. When confronted she said " you need to be more specific on the phone." I guess it was my fault. From now on wherever I stay (Marriot and Hyatt's included) I will ask " Is this a homosexual nudist resort where guys run around your shity hotel naked."
We found a new place that was amazing a few blocks away for everyone to stay and it ended up being a blast. A fun race/trip. A very funny begining.
P.S. I have nothing aginst gay people or nakedness. It's just not condusive to a relaxing family trip.
