So millions of gallons of oil are still spilling into the gulf with no end in sight. Sea life is dying, commercial fishing is shut down, and the damage is only getting started. They still don't seem to know if/when they can cap this sucker. It seems reasonable to be concerned that this will affect the race in November.
Since there are a lot of us doing this race, what is everyone's best guess at what will happen?
- they'll move the swim?
- they'll move the whole race?
- they'll wait til the last minute and declare it a DU?
- should I register for a local, unbranded IM just in case?
- stop worrying: they'll have it under control by Nov.?

Option 1: stop worrying,
Option 1: stop worrying, they'll have it under control by Nov., or the oil will be somewhere else :(
Option 2: they'll wait til the last minute and declare it a Du.
It's probably too soon to
It's probably too soon to worry about it, but as you get closer to the date, maybe they will issue statements or maybe you can contact someone. I don't know- that's what I would try possibly in September or so.
ok... i would be worrying
ok... i would be worrying about it myself now if I was doing it and trying to contact the organizers to see what possible plans are if the oil does affect it... it can't hurt to ask them now to see what they are thinking or not thinking. You paid money for this event... you should be able to talk to them about this valid concern.
I just wouldn't expect much
I just wouldn't expect much of an answer. To your point, this thing is still gushing and the race is more than five months away. Maybe after they cap they'll have a better opportunity for contingency planning, but I'm afraid it's too early to expect much.
has anyone come across any
has anyone come across any published info regarding the future flow of the oil with the currents?
the problem is... not likely to be capped as the pressure is too great. most likely will need to wait for relief well to be finished in August.
Ugh. I really don't want to
Ugh. I really don't want to do a du.
The more people that contact
The more people that contact the organizers the more they have to sit up and take notice as well as answer.
Even though this isnt initially their problem, they will have to mitigate the fact that 2000+ triathletes, spending 24+ weeks of their life training for an event while putting a lot of other things aside will get very pised off if at the last moment they cancel or turn it into a duathlon.
They need to have contigencies, and with 24 weeks or there abouts till the race start they have plenty of time, so there should be no excuses.
My bet is they are examining all the possibilities right now, and are trying to see what works.
You;'ve probably seen this
You;'ve probably seen this already, but here is the model from NOAA on expected oil flow.

I can't tell if this is good or bad news, but it doesn't look good. Seems to stay off the FL coast in the Gulf, but it's hard to believe it would skirt down the penninsula and not hit the beach.
This situation will not be
This situation will not be better in November. It will be worse.
I would contact them soon to
I would contact them soon to see what their plan is if it gets worse and is hitting the beach ;-P
The only experience I have
The only experience I have with oil spills is that I was in France in the 70s when the Amoco Cadiz tanker ran aground off the seacoast of Brittany France. It was at the time the biggest oil-spill in Europe and perhaps in the World. I visited Brittany a few years after the spill, after the nation harnessed its resources to clean up the coastlines over many years.
While from afar, the coast looked normal, it only took stepping onto the beaches to realize that an oil spill is something a region never gets rid of completely. Every little rock you lifted up would reveal a small amount of black oil beneath it. The surface of the water would show a rainbow iridescence that was a tell tale sign of oil.
I don't expect that the gulf of Mexico and Florida and parts of the east coast will be safe to swim in for a good long time - especially given the fact that oil is spewing as I am typing this and well into the coming fall, making the Amoco Cadiz incident a tiny blip by comparison. Maybe I'm overly pessimistic but this is what I am predicting.
How about 156 laps of the

It is good to see they are trying to help ;-)
If it was me, I'd register
If it was me, I'd register for an unbranded IM. I seriously doubt there will be an IMFL swim, and unless they move the entire venue, it will be a Du. They have done Du's before, like at Utah, in adverse conditions. They may or may not announce it with enough time to do anything about it closer to the event. Not to be pessimistic about WTC or anything, but they haven't put out any statements yet (like we're working on finding a new location) and I'd bet that they don't say anything until pretty late in the game.
I would hope they'd at least
I would hope they'd at least be trying to coordinate other options. A quick glance at a map shows a solid sized lake (Powell Lake), practically right off the start of the course a few miles into the bike. Wouldn't take much to have it start there, but still do the run in the usual location. Obviously, there's much more detail than that - but given we're some 5 months out, there's no real valid excuse for not being able to make it work. If they don't, then it's just a money grab.
I e-mailed Mdot last week
I e-mailed Mdot last week and they responded that they are "closely monitoring the situation." I have to assume that they are looking at other venues for the swim, but I also have to consider that the logistics may not work for any number of reasons. I am planning on registering for the Great Floridian as a back up. On a personal note, I grew up in the Tampa/St Pete area and I have swum in those waters all my life. I am devastated by what is happening down there. So sad.
If you are registered for IMFL and want to be one more voice asking them to move the swim, e-mail Jennette Harshman at jennette@ironman.com

I would LOVE to hear their reply to that Jeff. I really like your best scenario ideas. Both are reasonable. "Monitoring the situation" is getting old and people want to know where they stand. I am not even doing IMFL, but it annoys the**** out of me that no one is giving any info. People are training their butts off at all hours- they should get SOME kind of feedback as to if the race will be on as promised

Very well said. I read someplace this week that they are trying to move the swim but now I can't find it. Hopefully, they will send out an update soon!

I saw the news over the weekend and I saw the reports of oil globs being on the beach in Panama City Beach and they think it may continue for months and get much worse. I am not doing the race but I hope they do something for you guys. The site above looks great and hopefully it will get a decent response since there are options. ;-)

That was excellently worded. I hope they are paying attention! They still have plenty of time to make this work for people.
It makes me so sad to think about. I mean the whole thing is horrifying on a gigantic scale. But then there's the smaller scales of all the individuals it touches in so many ways. That beach was so very beautiful, it's awful to think about the oil washing up there.

I wonder what would happen
I wonder what would happen if a hurricane made it's way through the area anytime soon. Could you imagine a vortex of petro with lightning. It'll be like Sherman's march all over again. I bet baptisms would double after something like that. I'm being light about it but it definately would make a mess.
