riding tri-bike in local 52-mile tour

So there is this annual bike tour this weekend. My question is this. Is it appropriate to ride my tri bike in this or should I go for the road bike? If it were a winter ride I would of course ride the road bike but being this close to the season and my first race in a few weekends...well..which one? I know most riders in this tour are older primary cyclists.

thoughts?

how many people?
100? probably not a problem
thousands? may be somewhat problematic

either way, the roadies will look down on you

+1 Just stay out of the aero bars if/when someone else is around. Ride what you feel like.

Thanks...it's probably going to be in the hundreds. I'll stay out of aero position. Good info.

I've only seen a few local tours, but I thought that's where people brought recumbents, tangents, unicycle, and all those things that people dream up in their garage to pedal the distance. Have fun.

As long as you're not riding in a pack, who cares? Ride what you want to ride.
Some of my buddies and I are planning to ride our tri bikes at a local Century ride next month. For fun and training, we're gonna do it team time trial fashion. The roadies will hate us, but we'll have a blast and get in some good distance in the aerobars. And yes, we'll be out of the aero bars when in or around other cyclists.

I do MS150 ride every year and last year i rode it on my tri bike because my road bike is old and very heavy. We had a small group and it really wasn't a problem. Of course i was out of aero bars when i was following and by the end of the day 2 my hands were hurting.

After group rides, go for a run that puts the roadies in their place.

EXACTLY. Of course, you need to run out the way the bikes are coming in... and be sure to say hello to the roadies that you passed in the last 20 miles as they are finishing their ride.

Update-

ended up riding my tri bike in the tour...of course you guys were right. The entire time while riders were still in packs the 'roadies' were terrible. They were yelling and acting terrible. Not directed at me but to all of the Tri folks. One group was cussing at a fella that came flying by them in aero screaming at him to "SLOW DOWN!". I was like? "slow down??" why?? Anyway, it was interesting to say the least. Anyway it was a fun tour and good practice.

What is the big deal with using a Tri bike in a strictly bike race?

If you are doing it for your training why not. Just respect the other riders and when you finish definitely go for a short run. I have done that before and the roadies quieted down ;-)
