Yet Another.... Bike Input Question

Trifuel'rs,

I have completed one season of oly's and sprints on a trek 1200. No major problems. Got me into tri's and got me from point A to point B. I am having fit's with the front derailleur (tiagra) and have had it "tuned" by more than one bike mechanic and it still isn't smooth. I thought about buying a new front derailleur and putting it on. not too much $$ and wouldn't be too hard. I plan on longer events (first HIM this year) and want a good reliable bike.

Then i got to thinking why am i upgrading a baseline road bike for my tri's?

I started looking and entry level Tri bikes with better components. I found a Jamis Comet 2008 at a LBS. 750$ is the asking sales price. Shimano 105 would be the lowest component, and i think the shifters are dura ace. Plus it has aero bars along with typical carbon fork and seat post.

Anybody have any experince with the Comet or Jamis in general. Is a jamis a "downgrade" form a trek. It is a dual crank too, rather than a triple that my trek has. You can imagine my frustration with a triple that has a funky front derailleur.

here are the specs on the Jamis Comet..

thank you!

$750 for an aluminum frame, 105 drivetrain, tribars and shifters*, carbon fork/seat post is a really good deal. Plus you get to lose the granny gear. Convert the Trek to a single speed, use it as your "rain bike," or sell it.

Shimano only makes their bar-end shifters in DuraAce, I believe.

Keep the roadie, slap on a Ultegra FD and you'll be good to go for a long time. I have an older Trek 2300 and it's the same frame, just with full Ultegra. Nothing wrong with your bike. You'd be surprised how cheap you can get a new crank for that thing, too. If it has the no name crank on it, or even the Tiagra crank )if they make one) just about anything will be better.

Includes BB. Not bad.

The '08 Comet looks very serviceable, especially for that price. While it's not exactly super aero, it has the correct tri geometry with a 78 degree seat tube. For $750, it's a steal.

Fix your cheap and easy to fix shifting issue, and get a tri bike. Nothing wrong with having two rides. I have three and am working on more! ;) Remember the optimal number of bikes to own is n+1!

thanks for both of your input.

i wish i could have both, but i doubt funds will allow it.

i'd love the tri bike, but 20-30$ for an FD would fix most my issues.

im gonna go test ride the comet this week....

Keep the Trek even if you get the comet. You won't get enough for it on Ebay and in a year or 2 you'll go. Hmmmmm I wish I had my old trek to commute to work on... Bam you'll have to spend a couple hundred to bike to work instead of it being already paid for. =0)
I just got a new tri bike and thats why I'm keeping my Allez. Plus I love it. She's my baby. How can I just sell her?

ok so i rode the comet today.

my first time on a tri bike, or anything with areobars. i sucked terribly at holding a solid line....

n e body else have these initial problems when hoping on ur first set of aero boars or tri bikes?

Oh, yeah! It takes a couple rides...
