Tri-Suit Question

Hey guys,

I'm new to the whole Triathlon scene and was wondering what you all would recommend for men's one-piece Tri-suits. I'm racing in Louisville in August and plan on paying whatever it takes to go high end at that point, but for now, does anyone have any recommendations for inexpensive tri-suits just to train in? Thanks.

People don't generally train in one piece suits. You would probably be more comfortable in training if you got specific clothing for each event. Plus, swimming with a tri suit in chlorine will break it down quickly. Get a normal swimsuit for your swim training, polyester ones (ex. speedo endurance) last a long time and they are just a little more expensive than normal ones. For your bike training you want to be comfortable, if you aren't you won't bike very much. I have the de soto 400 mile bib shorts and they are great. I got them last year on clearance directly from the company. Those are expensive if you can't find them on sale (about $150 regular price) but they make a huge difference in comfort. For both running and biking I usually wear tight fitting under armour shirts. They less expensive than cycling specific jerseys but they don't have pockets. If you get a bento box for your bike this isn't a problem. For running just get a few pairs of running shorts. I got some from eastbay a few months ago and they are great and were only about $15. The only issue is that they don't have pockets but at that price that can be dealt with. Good luck.

A lot of folks use one piece tri-suits for short stuff. For IM's though my preference has always been two pieces. Easier in the bathroom stops. You can have a jersey with pockets to lug stuff. I do have a horror story about breaking a zipper on a one piece suit just as the gun went off and having to cobble something together with a t shirt and a borrowed pony tail band...
Some folks swear by one pieces in IM's...but in my experience I haven't seen them very often at that distance.

Thanks guys! Training two piece seems to make a lot more sense, but being used to bibs and singlets i'll probably go with the tri suit on race day. Thanks again.

I would not used a one piece in a full iron. bathroom brakes are not a choice and not an easy task on a one piece. For anything shorter you can get by, but I have done a 1/2 on a one-piece and would now use a two piece.

Also, depending on your body frame you may not be able to find a one piece that fits correctly. Top too big, bottom just right, etc.

Stick with the two pieces.

I race two piece. Easier to fit, clean, and you don't have to match which for whatever reason makes me feel a lot better about being a nerd. I have found that I like Pearl Izumi shorts and Saucanny tops. It's all good. In the end of the day race in whatever you have.
