Christmas Present Question Updated

Christmas is the best holiday ever for the record. So I've gone from wanting to upgrade my bike to being able to have the means to buy a $2000 Tri Bike. The $2000 dollars is a pretty firm upper end because after taxes I'm looking at about $2,200 (yay chicago 10% sales tax). So not to beat a dead horse about entry level tri bikes but I'm looking for a little bit of advice.

Here are my criteria:
Full carbon frame if possible and from a reputable company with a frame that in the future I can upgrade components on. That's it. The price is really the most important thing.

The LBS that I bought my last bike at has a 2010 Cannondale Slice 5 for $2,000 that I'm going to try out this next week.
I'm also planning on hitting up several local tri shops in the area to see what 2009's they have left that they need to sell.

Also, any advice on bargaining the price down on a new bike?

Thanks everyone!

The Cannondale's are sweet. If I were buying a new tri bike I would be giving them a serious look. Although you will probably have an easier time bargaining on a leftover. I would go for the direct approach and just tell them what you would buy the bike for, and if they agree you will make the deal immediately. If nit, you will go for plan (or bike) B. Good luck,

$2k for a tri bike gets you a lot!
A QR Seduza, Cervelo p2c, Giant Trinity Alliance, etc. There are fantastic bikes out there for that amount of coin... just MAKE SURE IT FITS. You really should consider finding a reputable FIST certified fitter in your area that will do a fit without a bike and give you your stack and reach and other measurements so you can find the bike that will fit the best. No point in spending that kind of money without getting the perfect bike.

Silence is your friend. Ask for a better deal or comment that it seems steep and then be silent until they flinch.

You may also have better luck getting some accessories thrown in gratis than having the price drop on the bike. Use it as a time to pick up some free pedals, aero bottle or trainer tire.

Take cash. Yes, take that dough with you. You'll get a deal faster if they see you have $2k (or whatever) in your wallet. Just don't super low ball them. Especially if it's already marked down more than $500. You can get great deals. This time last year I saw a Giant Trinity Alliance 1 in my size for $1600 (normally in the $2k+ range). It was niiiiice.

Cash works, but I avoid it for larger retail purchases. The reason being, is that I want a paper trail for warranties. Also, many credit cards double the length of a warranty if you purchase with their card. If you have any issues with the bike, your options may be reduced with cash. Lots of places don't give a real receipt if your negotiation on cash. The reason being is that they use it as a tax dodge. If you trust the place though, then its all good.
