Cycling/Spinning Challenge

December's Challenge: To bike as much as possible from December 1st to December 31st.

Rules: 5 miles or 8 km = 1 point. Trainer or on the road counts the same.

Keep it simple and participate as much or as little as you would like.
Keep track of daily and monthly totals on this thread.
Share workouts and tips to keep the time on the trainer manageable.
Enjoy yourself and good luck.

You are the Dalai Lama of offseason fitness. My wife thanks you (insert perverted connotation here). Looking forward to shredding the sneaks for a while. It is time to become one with the trainer. I wonder how many times I can watch Braveheart, Gladiator, 13th Warrior & Troy over the next 31 days.

The Dalai is a big hitter. Long.

Excellent bike trainer choices. Throw in 300 and Gettysburg.

I really should sign up for this one! I hate biking in the off season....hence I should do it more (that's sick). What should the point value be for spinning (like in a 45 min class)?
II hate biking in the off season....
What's your excuse? A cold day in Houston is 50*. "Brrrr, that Gulf breeze is fogging my glasses." PoC has an excuse.

Based upon 17mph average, you will do about 12.75 miles in 45 minutes or earn 12.75 points.

or

Calculation Points = ((A/B) * C)*D where
A = Average Speed
B = 60 minutes (Constant)
C = Actual Time spent spinning/on trainer (Distance)
D = Point(s) per mile.

I guess we need an average mile per hour figure to be consistant across the field. Propose 17Mph.

okay, I'm spoiled, but looking at the forcast for the week, the lows in the 40s his in the 50s, yup, brrr (for me). I will have to break out the tights and jacket and earwarmers...ya, I know...waaawaaa. It's all relative.

+1
some folks have a front mounted speed sensor so time might be all they can do

leggings and ear warmers when temps are in the 50s?

Man, I was always told Texans were tough ;-)

We can use the honor system to calculate perceived MPH/KPH for those without computers for the trainer. I know that I avg. a much higher speed on the trainer than on the road.

The point is to get out there or on the trainer and get pedaling. Whatever motivates you is what you should go with.

Good! finally a challenge that i can fit into my schedule!

Another best flick to watch during the challenge- Off Road to Athens:

I'm in...as my ankle will limit my running for the next week or so.
Besides, because of all the running I've been doing, I'm behind on the UMCA Indoor Challenge: http://www.ultracycling.com/standings/indoorchallenge.html

Add in Fight Club and Usual Suspects and you have my husband's entire preferred DVD collection. Guess I'll be watching IronChef by myself ; )

And I'm with jtrimom. I need this, but I'm not looking forward to it!

heehee, you sound like one of my kids: you can make me do it, but you can't make me LIKE it!

That UMCA stuff is hardcore. If it's less than 2 hours it doesn't count.

We'll see... Like Toni, I need this, badly, but it won't fun. I think I've biked about 300mi in the past 2 years (less than I've run). We'll see how it works with travel and finals. I have a gps for the road when there is no ice, but if I'm on rollers or trainer 5pts/15min.

That Stephen Bugbee dude (2009 points leader) is riding the fence of narcissism. How does he spend that much time in the saddle (indoors)? If he doesn't watch out, he'll be a self made eunuch.

I am moving my bike and trainer down to the living room.
My wife is stuck on the couch for the next 6-8 weeks anyway so I can keep her company and work out as well. ;-)

Dont have a trainer and have the all clear to bike.......brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr guess I am in......somewhere this week I will be on the bike...outside.

Think we should stick with Garens inital plan. 5 miles( 8K)=1 point. If you make it, like Catwood suggested, 15 minutes =5 points well thats 25 miles in 15 minutes using the original idea. Now...I KNOW Catwood is fast but jeepers! ;)
If the question is "how do I keep track of my milage on the trainer?" It's actually kind of easy if you have a good handle on your riding. You know how long it takes you to do 5 miles. At 18 mph 1 mile would take you 3 minutes and low change. You know what 18 mph feels like so 5 miles in about 16 minutes and a bit.
Another method would be to have a cyclometer that allows for cadence/mph with a sensor attached to the cranks.
My preferred method is to attach a separate computer to the frame or trainer where I can see it. Attach a sensor to the seat stays and a magnet on the rear wheel. Easy.
Simple is better and I do think it's best if we're all on the same page.
I'll be using 5 miles = 1 point...inside or out.

Im in first tri this summer gotta be ready.

Ooops! I can't do math (and I was a math major, that's what I get for finishing college). I meant, for me training ~15mph => 20min=1pt, or if I'm going really hard ~20mph => 15min=1pt... But I could go with my other plan because indoor riding is so much more mentally tough and I only have rollers right now. Unless there is lots of ice, I won't ride indoors anyways.

Oh, Rollers! I love rollers...and trainers...I have both....I'm sick and twisted...

I'll be out when I can...in when I can't. Simple.

After having to leave the 30 days of running I shifted to a modified trainer challenge...and this is the perfect way to continue it. 5mi= 1pt sounds good to me. Oooohh can't wait for the spinervals training pack that is on my Christmas list! When it isn't a training dvd I usually go with the ones mentioned above, add in Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and others along those lines or whatever my wife (ha! wife still sounds funny to me) puts on while she keeps me company.

1hr spinning
3 pts

16.38 miles outside = 3.28 points haven't done one of these challenges yet so i don't know if i am supposed to be out to the decimal or round down.

temp at 6 am 39.4.
temp at 6 am 39.4.
extra credit :)

For those who ride the trainer without any indicator of speed/cadence: do you just ride at a steady pace the entire time, getting in base mileage or do you ride intervals based on HR zones? Riding on a trainer is a great way to get in power workouts even without a power meter. Just slap a speedometer on the rear, do an FTS (functional threshold speed) test and then base intervals off that. Would be super easy to determine on a mag trainer with linear resistance curves, but isn't too difficult to figure out on a fluid with a cubic-ish power curve either.

Total =1.5 points

20 miles. 1:07 on the trainer with Andy, Bertie and Lance up the Ventoux.
4 points.

15 miles = 3 pts

While I am no fan of the trainer, it let's me spend more time with my kids than if I was out on the road. Today, I set up the trainer in the kitchen and supervised my 11 yr old making bread (her idea) and my son doing his math homework. Love a good multitask!

10 miles.
2 points.

8km's 1 point

15 miles - 3 points

Yesterday I did absolutely nothing and loved every minute of it. Today I did 10 miles while watching "The 13th Warrior". Nothing like large Scandinavians swinging 15lb swords to get you pumped.
