As the triathlon season is now done for some, I have come up with a few questions that I know have been asked before... many times... but since the content has been so entertaining lately I figured I'd start a new one :-) AND... I know everyone is different, but lets just say I am you... what would you do...

First Question: It deals with the pool. I have come to resent the fact that 84 degree pool water < 90 degree pool deck < 95 degree rinse shower < 99.1 degree big jacket and clothes. Realistically, How long can I hang up my goggles before I have to get back in the pool? I am still very active, but don't think I can handle one more swim workout. At one point I thought I was losing my lungs when my workouts got shorter, but then I realized I was just bored.

Will one moderate workout/week for next 2-3 months be enough to keep my shoulders loose and hair frizzy?

As for some background info: I have never been on a swim team so don't know much about structured workouts. The swim has historically been my best leg -- usually in the top 10%-15% out of the water; so I have yet to "lose it in the swim" (I save the losing it for the run.) My form is okay and my yardage has been plentiful.

Question 2:

Lets just say you were racing in (or moving to*) Australia. How much does it cost to ship your bike? How far does a bike get broken down? Can I pack all my cycling gear in the box? What is the best process? Can my LTS pack it up and then let my folks send it when I'm ready?
*Decided on Adelaide, Australia

Thanks as always!

what bike should I buy? j/k

In the other thread, you said "close to the coast and easternish" Does Adelaide, Australia qualify as Easternish? hmmm

I don't have any advice for you on either of your dead horse questions. I happen to relish swimming lately, But I am just doing "whatever" workouts that come to mind.

It might not be a bad idea to buy a hard case box for your bike. I always packed alot of stuff in my bike box when I travelled with it, but there is a weight limit.
Nice thread idea! I like it!

I think folks flog themselves way too much in the pool for so little gain.
Getting ready fro an IM, I swim twice a week. Repeat 500 meters building to over race distance.
Get out of the pool for a while. Go back when you want. or go but when you feel like it, not because of some schedule. Yes a couple of times a week, doing what you want, for the next few months will keep you in fine stead.

I've never shipped a bike. Can't help you there.

My best guess would be you could skip a month all together and not lose much. Maybe just do one swim a week, or maybe even every other week. If you took three months off it may be a chore to start back up again. But more importantly, if you are really that burned out, forget about what coming back will be like in 30, 60, 90 days if you take them off. Take time off now if you aren't enjoying it. You'll come back stronger psychologically regardless of how long you take off.

jwillia852 wrote:

Frankfurt to Dallas via FedEx was $500USD in hard-sided box. The only things you take off are the wheels and pedals. Everything else is loosened (seat post, bars) and rotated or lowered to fit into box with only a pedal wrench and your multitool. A quality bike box will also accomodate some gear - shoes, clothes, wedgie - but not helmet. You also have to be carefull of loading the box down so much the weight increases the shipping cost.

I have done 1 swim workout since September and have no plans to do one any time soon. It is all about doing what makes me happy in the off-season and right now running and lifting light weights makes me happy.

What is the best recovery drink besides chocolate milk?
What bike should I buy besides a Cervelo, because everyone has a Cervelo? (I have a Cervelo)
Can pushups, curls, walking up the steps, drinking 16 oz beers, and napping count for core points? My abs are actively engaged so they should count right? (Just having fun, not being serious)

One of the greatest responses of all time Sooner. And I bet you rattled it off in under 5 minutes.

Sooo, back to the swimming question.

#1 I think you should swim at least 5-10 times in the six months or so before the race, whether you need to or not.
For example, I swam 9 times last year, before IMC end of August, but I didn't get in th ewater until the the ice broke up and went out, say July 17th. I managed to fit in 9 or 10 swims before the race Aug 24th and my swim leg was 1:31:00 with no pain.
Now this year, I separated my shoulder in Feb playing BB so I held off on the swimming until July 27th and still managed to get in 5 swims before the race Aug 30th and I went 3 minutes faster in 1:28:00 and the shoulder was fine.

You may draw your own conclusions.
Picture

#2. Tear the bike down to the limit, wrap it in bubblewrap and put it in a cardboard box. It'll be fine.

Do I look like a dork training in my compression socks?
If I ride with only one earbud in and the music not too loud am I safe?
Should I eat before my morning workouts and if so, what should I eat?
If a person is hogging the lane at my local pool and is ignoring me on the deck, should I jump on top of them as I enter the pool?
If I am riding my tri bike and a roadie passes and doesn't wave back what does this mean about me and the state of our country?

I was just thinking that if someone new to the forum read these questions, s/he wouldn't get it. Most are pretty valid, although having been here for a while, many are hilarious :)

oh, and can I/ should I have sex before a big race? How often is too often? Will it make my performance better or worse? Is abstinence worth better performance? What if I don't have a partner? Will it work by myself? Does is still count as tapering if I am using all the time/energy I would be in the pool/on my bike/running, in bed with my significant other?

Then sell it before I leave. Maybe I can find a sweet tri bike. I'll be sure to ask the group what bike to buy when I get there :-D... Just Kidding... Seriously.

Answers:
1) Of course it looks big, you just added 1/2 inch of rubber to your butt, that's a 3 inch increase in your hip measurement!

2) A "Brick" is a swim training aid. Tuck it into the back of your "surfer shorts."

heh.

I will be gone 18 months. I am seriously contemplating not bringing my bike (WAY too expensive). If you were in a similar situation, and you know that your bike will be roughly 3 -4 years old when you got back on it, would you ever consider selling it before you leave?

The bike won't go bad, but it will depreciate in value in the year and half that you're not using it. It's pretty new now but 3+ years might be the threshold for 'older'. Plus you'll have to either pay to check it over cuz it's been sitting so long or do it yourself before you get back on it. I say sell it and use the money to help buy a new bike when you get there. Maybe you'll find a cool brand based in AUS that you've never heard of. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cream of the crop? I'm the cream of the corn.

Thanks - Yah I'm not worried about the bike sitting for the time, rather I fear the depreciation end of it. Tough one for sure...

Seriously, just take it along with you.

Last time I flew my bike from Houston to middle of nowhere Malaysia, I got pinged for a bike fee on Continental between Houston and LAX, and that was only because my layover was 12 hours and outside of the baggage transfer window. Otherwise, flying the bike via Malaysia Air from LAX to home was considered one piece of luggage and was free of charge in a cardboard box. Granted, it was a CroMo fixie and I wasn't worried about too much of it getting damaged in transit, so the entire piece weighed about 25 pounds.
