trail running 101

Okay, Longhorn HIM is done, the "season" is officially over...now onto trail running.

The Rocky Raccoon is next Saturday and weather.com says it will be low in the 50s, high in the 70s (which will likely change about 10 times in the next week), but we can go with this forecast cuz I like it. Normally, I would wear shorts and a tank top for a run in that weather, but I don't know if trail running has other "rules" for clothes. We already established that I can wear my regular road shoes as this is not a "technical" course. Regular socks?

Also, It says there are 4 fully stocked aid stations for the 25k. I assume that means I should take a bottle of water to run with and refill at the aid stations. Would that be correct to assume? and should I bring anything else with me to eat?

Wow, I am a super newbie to this. If there is anything I am missing, please let me know. I don't want to show up and people will be pointing and snickering at this woman who clearly doesn't have a clue.

If I was cockier I would go for the whole 50k, not worry about my time, just for the cool factor...but I am too scared. Maybe next year :)

No rules for Ultras on clothing...unlike tri's where there always seems to be a current "uniform."
Wear what trips your trigger. Wear your regular socks. at this point it's too late to monkey around with a new brand.
I carry a bottle...sip at your leisure.
Check and see what they have food wise at the aid stations. Pack some of your own snacks in a jersey or shorts pocket. You shouldn't need that much as it's only fifteen miles. However the slower you go the longer you'll be out there and the more nutrition you'll need.
Body glide everything.
Trail running folks and Ultra types are the last folks who would snicker and point. Wait till you see some of them! It's much more laid back.
If I were in your boat....I'd go for the 50k, but that's me, not you. Decide that for yourself.
Have a great time!

OOOOHHHHH!!!! that's just soooo tempting!!! but I am not "trained" for that distance at this point (although, like I said I wouldn't do it for time...)
I've never done a trail run. I wish I could decide while I do it...
I would hate to sign up for the 50k and have to drop out...oh, what to do, what to do?

Suck it up?
See what I'm made of?
Start small?
Anybody? Anybody?

50k! 50k! 50k!

Marathon is 42k so all you need to run is 8k more
I vote for 50

Sign up for the 50K, go as far as you can and have some fun. You may surprise yourself.

KEEP THEM COMING! I am leaning towards 50k. I am so EXCITED to do that, whereas the 25k just sounds nice.

Second weigh in.
Some quotes to push you over the edge:
"God gave us a neck. He meant us to stick it out."
"And those in England, now abed, will think themselves accursed they were not here!"
"Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try!"
Follow your heart...
Sign up for the 50k and see what shakes out.
When it comes to running Ultras my favorite quote:
"Make haste, slowly."

Just make sure you are recovered from the half. Your progression has been pretty amazing to this point and you have some pretty big plans for the future. I am not saying don't go for it, just be sure it is the smart thing to do.

The trail might be a little easier on your legs than a road surface but a little more technical.

If you think you could swing a marathon this weekend then go for it. Take walk breaks and walk on the incline if there are any. Take it easy.

Bring your own water bottle if you don't know how far the aide station are. Sip as needed.

Have fun and enjoy the ultra crowd. They are fun. ;-)

I am not recovered yet, definitely feeling better, but it's not till next saturday.

And, Beads, I don't think I could swing a marthon this weekend, but I am not looking at it like a marathon, with a time goal and pacing and all that; just a long day in the woods.

I just ran my first 50K after never doing a long run over 13 miles. I was however running 40 miles a week along with long bike rides on the off days. It was a trail run with some real nast terrain to deal with. It took just a hair under 7 hours but the course was awesome as was the day so it wasn't that bad. Other than two blisters that set in at mile 8 the finish was never in doubt. Go for the 50K it was such an awesome feeling. Just make sure you don't have much planned for the few days after.

Come on jtrimom, just go for a long run then get back to your taper!

oh, you know I just sign up for thses things as an excuse to taper

After PRing your HIM (awesome) why not tri the 50? You have all season to taper trimom!!!
Just a long day in the woods...LOVE IT!
Have fun on this one.
You'll surprise yourself.

So what did you decide? Or is it going to be a race day decision?

nope, I signed up for the 50k...now I'm tapering...
Will let y'all know how it goes (the race, not the tapering)

I love that you are doing the 50k! Wish I could join you. Please let us know how it goes!

Good luck, but I think you will be able to do it. ;-)

Good luck in taper and the race! I'm sure you'll do great in both ;)

I am super sore, but happy...kinda like after some good "tapering" :)
