Ok, Ultrarunners -- how hardcore are you???
Wow! I am not an ultrarunner yet but i am always in the process of loosing a toenail so i kinda understand why they would go to this extreme!Ouch!
I have gotten a few black toenails and a few were coming a little loose and healed up but I would not get surgery to remove them unless I absolutely had too. I did the JFK 50 with Anton and my feet were in great shape. Not a black toenail or even a blister. My shoes fit perfect and I lubed up my feet and had on wicking socks. I think that really helped.
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
I could see doing away with them if they were a chronic problem. I don't know what toenails are really good for, besides getting ingrown. To me, this seems like getting your appendix removed, if appendicitis was caused by ultrarunning. I'm not too attached to my toenails. Well, I guess I am, which is why I'd have to get them removed. But still.
Hard days hard, easy days easy.
Reminded me about cat declawing - inhuman but for some, necessary.

Only non-ultrarunners would go EWWWWW! I know two folks who had it done years ago.
In the Ultra community it's quite common, has been for years, and in fact "Fixing Your Feet" recommends it as a viable option for getting rid of toenail problems. It's an easy fix/ I've thought about it. Sure would help with the fungus problem!

I could always pee in your shoe, would that help? ;-)

Hummm Part of my post got cut off...
Mind you now, it's not folks who run a 50k once in awhile who do this...It's the folks who run 100's for training runs and are doing Badwater and The Barkley in the same year....those kind of folks.

I'm not saying EWWWW! I have two blackened toe nails and can clearly see why someone who runs ultras on a regular basis would have their toe nails removed.

I'm on my way to ultra-dom and plan on doing my first ultra in july 2010. I've notched several 26.2s off the list though.
I suffer from Tater Toe syndrome. Yup, big ol' fat feet. Messes up my big toes all the time running. I'm actually meeting w/ a podiatrist in a week to see if nail removal is an option. Much rather be nekkid-toed than have those suckers be in pain and keep me from running.
Seems like it would be a lot easier and a lot less costly to just find the proper pair of shoes, but hey, whatever floats your boat. I've had 2 falling off black toe nails caused by shoes with a too tight toe box. New shoes, no problems.
I can see tho how nailess toes could appeal to some foot fetishnistas ;)
And if anyone wants to see the actual surgery:
Wow... I have a nice black big toe right now from a non training related incident (read "I'm a klutz") and I can see once you get an irritated nail how it can wreck your training. Ive been running mostly barefoot or in vibrams until this thing either falls off or grows out. For the 1st 5 days of cycling I would just ride with my feet on the tops of my shoes....
I dont know that I'm that hardcore to get them gone. I live in FL in the beach and sandals are a way of life.
Ultrarunners are for sure a different breed! Kudos!

I currently have 10 toes but only 8 toenails. I hadn't heard of this, but it is a great idea to those who suffer. I like it

Oh dear god. I say this with love, but Ew! Ew! and, for good measure, Ew!

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
Thanks Sooner! That was cool...
Sometimes it's not about just finding a proper fitting pair of shoes.
Feet swell well past the confines of a larger shoe size. Trail toe stubs that you don't feel because your feet are already pounded to dust. Restricted blood flow...any number of reasons that may pop up in a loooong event. Too, everyones feet are different. Some folks never have toe problems. Some, all the time.

+1 Anton. I never knew my shoes where to small until I started with the long distances. I know that sounds wierd, but I never had any problems with my size 7s until I started training for the marathon. In fact if my shoes were a little bigger it felt like I would kick them off so I stuck with the size 7s until a few weeks ago.
