Guys (and Girls if you choose to dive into this one :-)),

On my 10 mile run today I lost a battle with chaffing. It got me bad... on the the worst possible place(s). I typically wear a light, fine mesh short with cotton boxer briefs, but considering they don't have the same magical properties of high-tech material, I decided to 'experiment' with some under armour compressions shorts I had. Needless to say... Did not work.

So of course I got to thinking that perhaps I needed yet another upgrade.

What do you wear? Mesh shorts? Tri shorts? Running Specific Shorts? I can't see myself wearing those short, lined running shorts due to my disproportionately large shanks, but I would consider alternatives to them.

A buddy recommended Lulemon shorts, although I have hard time believing they are worth the money.

Maybe this just a case where I need to htfu?

Thanks as always

Jeff

If you keep chafing you won't have anything to 'HTFU' ! ;-)

You're wearing something under your running shorts? Do the shorts have a built in brief? If they do wearing yet another layer is asking for chaffing.
Normally I wear running shorts with a brief and Body Glide the inside of my thighs. No problems doing that up to 50 miles. For long stuff I wear tri-shorts and still slick up a bit around the waist band and the crotch area. Cold weather: Tights and Capiline wind shell briefs from Patagonia.
HTFU does not apply to crotch, nipple or inner thigh chaffing. That stuff will send even the hardest of the hard in search of Vaseline or Body Glide!

I have a few pair of the Nike Men's Essential 7" Stretch Woven Short
http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpageMRA-NMF7WSS.html with just the liner.

or I will wear running underwear(wicking) under a pair of wicking running shorts with no liner.
For triathlons I go with trishorts

In any case I lube up and I use either 'BodyGlide' or a Butt butter chammy cream generously all over the undercarriage before any run over a 10k and especially if I am going to be sweating a lot.

I had the same issue. I ditched the loose short years ago and went with lycra (google "Nike Essential Dri-FIT Tight Men's Running Short"). I'm sure I look a bit fem walking into Starbucks, but no one at my running club cares. Zero chafing is most important, and Body Glide may work for a 5k but not all day. If you've been cycling and you shave your legs and have any modicum of a tan, you can pull it off. If you have lucky legs*, you may not?

Commando, why add another layer for friction: compression shorts warm weather, tri shorts or lined running insulator tights cold(er) weather and a good dollop of bag balm spread generousily on anything over 20.

Wash immediately after.

cotton briefs (boxer or otherwise) aren't going to work over 10k

invest in "running" shorts as mentioned above: tight or loose...doesn't matter...it will save your junk
for loose, get something with an internal brief

you can get away with spending $30 max at a nike outlet, or somesuch place...go check what "outlet" malls are near you and see what athletic offerings they have...i bet you can find something appropriate

OK, I got this one. I used to have chaffing problems and experimented quite a bit. First, boxers - totally a bad bad bad idea. The compression shorts like you mentioned, worked to a degree, but I mostly had basketball style shorts and sometimes still had issues.

Try the brief lined running shorts, but get them in a longer length. I've got a pair of Nike LiveStrong running shorts that have maybe an 8-9" inseam and rest barely above the knee. Not the richard simmons uber-short-shorts.

Since switching, I haven't had any problems at any distance. I have a few pairs shorter than the livestrongs, but nothing too bad and nothing w/ split sides. As others mentioned, body glide is an option. Check out the links I'm including below for a few pairs that worked for me (all 7-9" inseams). PS - longer shorts may actually make chaffing worse. Don't be afraid to show some leg, dude.

...Under Armour or tight tri shorts are good under your cotton shorts after you've been chaffed..... :)

I have several pair of Nike Dri-fit 4" inseam lined shorts and have had little problems.

you may be running from the idea of under armour at this moment, but the actual boxer briefs from under armour work great. vented, material does NOT chaff, and they come in 3 diff legnths. i also do not wear "running shorts" with the liners/jocks as they dont support too well.

+1 to anton - cant go wrong with body glide.

i would highly recommed this u/a boxer brief with shorts of any flavor. they work like a champ, and are a different material than the u/a compression shorts! good luck!

(personal preference, running shorts (liner cut out), and u/a boxer briefs)

Same for me most of the time. I train/race in tri shorts too on occasion. Even with that, I will body glide the "upper thigh area" for a bit of extra insurance.

+1 to running shorts (no liner) worn over some kind of tri short/compression short/under armor/whatever, with lube. I like non-bouncing factor of the tri shorts.

I think the lube is The Key. I will never forget the pain of taking a shower after my first half marathon... brutal chafing, just brutal. Poor little guy was out of commission for a while after that. Now a dab of Chamois Butter (I find I need it for anything over 10 miles) does the trick.

For me, some type of tight compression fit shorts as the bottom layer is key. That would mean either Under Armour compression shorts or tri shorts. If I wear the UA shorts, then I wear another pair of shorts over the top but that less an issue of functionality and more due to the fact that the UA compression shorts are really not meant to be worn as a top layer. If I wear the tri shorts then that's it. I also use Body Glide in a number of places when I go on longer runs. I've paid the price multiple times when I haven't so I feel your pain. Hope it all heals up quickly.

I guess i'm lucky i haven't had that problem in that area yet. I just wear regular loose shorts with mesh inside but without cotton briefs. I don't use any glide.
The shorts I use are Nike dry-fit and i also like my 2XU run shorts, sorry i don't remember exact models. I marathon distances in both in hot and cold weather and had no problem.

Good luck

Brief lined running shorts are the way to go. No underwear underneath, just the running shorts.

My husband's never had problems to my knowledge and here are his three options:
1. Warm weather running: running shorts with a built-in liner (all different lengths available)
2. Triathlon: tri shorts and nothing else
3. Cold weather running: under armour boxer briefs with running tights

In all cases, you can never have too much bodyglide.

If you get horribly chafed and need post-race therapy, Desitin cream (made for babies with diaper rash) works great! It will cure your chafing overnight!

Awesome responses!

They say if it ain't broke don't fix it.... My old way never gave me pain issues on long runs - I just wanted the benefits of dryness and compression. The compression shorts I tried were the problem so I may try some sort of lined short as long as they aren't super short (not designed for me) or just run in my tri shorts. The body glide will be key but I'm always out of it when I need it. I may want to buy a case lol.

Nothing really new to add to all the posts, but know that pain well. Ditch the cotton for sure. I wear running shorts with liner or Tri short and plenty of Body Glide no matter the attire or the temp. Can't be too safe.

+1 to using Desitin or Butt Paste to get rid of it overnight.

The first few times I had issues with chafing I'd try different shorts/underwear. Now I've realized that attire is not the problem, it's the lack of lube. On long runs I'll get a layer of body glide and then use a lot of Chamois ButtR in addition. Probably overkill, but I REALLY hate chafing.

Those are exactly what I've been looking for - I've been doing up to 8 km runs (lunch time) in my nike running shorts with built in liners without much of an issue but I found longer distances I was running in my swimming shorts (TyR).

I have a pair of lululemon running shorts - too bulky / stiff - not as good as a Nike or Adidas tech running short - Nike now has a boxer liner as opposed to a brief liner, which might be nice, but I will try the above out.

I haven't decided if I race so I can train or train so I can race. I really like both aspects of triathlon, except for race morning, standing by the lake, thinking, "What the F&^% am I thinking?"

and yes, any excuse to taper, daily, is good enough for me.

With or without suspenders on the denim? I have not tried the suspenders for fear of 'bunching' issues.
