I saw that on CNN and posted it on my Facebook. I think they all died in the half, not that it mattered. Obviously I don't know what happened, but like deaths from Swine Flu . . . pre-existing conditions? Still sad though. Cue the chorus: "See?! I told you running is dangerous!"

It is sad it happened and I agree there will be more fallout with the '..blah, blah, blah running is dangerous, blah, blah..."

yea I read all 3 were from the half. from the sounds of it, they were posting solid times too. Most of the times a 'pre-existing condition' rears its head a few days after the fact. Tragic for sure, but I'm curious to here what the cause is.

That made news all around the world folks, in Britan and France....still have no idea what happened though. I have a question, about certification. here in France a medical certificate from a doc is a must for any race, no cert no run. I can't figure out how 3 people died.

Warrior -

I've run the Detroit several times. Nothing needs to be signed by a doc, but I believe you do sign a waiver acknowledging that you are in proper health to participate in such an event. FWIW, it would drive me nuts if i had to get a cert from a physician to participate in every event.

Warrior -- new requirement in France? I ran the Paris marathon in 2004 and other than the standard risk waivers that you see here, I didn't need any sort of medical clearance. Maybe they didn't care since I'm an American? :-0

Actually the Certificate from a doctor has to be in date by 3 months, So I got one in June to cover the Summer, Sept to cover the winter, Jan to cover..........well you get the picture. It's a medical statement stating you are fit to practice the sport. The only way around it is if you belong to and offical club and then you have a licence to run. As for it being new I can't say, I started running in 2007 and it was either the medical certificate or nothing. I think it's an insurance thing, now that I come to think of it, I have never seen a waiver here.

When I did the Rome(Italy) marathon in 2007 I had to have a medical consent form signed by my doctor before I could race and that was standard for that race.

Race apps in the US generally advise you to check with your physician or you acknowledge that you are healthy enough to compete in the event.

I don't really see the point of the medical consent, most of the people who die aren't showing symptoms before the race that a typical physical would catch. It's a huge burden to put on people with marginal benefit, for what is still en exceedingly rare occurrence...

Its a shame that people died, but I would bet that Detroit IS more dangerous than running. I run all the time, have never been to Detroit, and im still above ground.......for now.
