Foot Cramps During the Swim ?
A girl I used to work with said she cuts out caffeine and carbonated drinks six weeks prior to a race, she also mentioned the potassium bit as well. Said she didn't have issues with cramps after that.
I can't say how well this works personally, as I have yet to try it..

Six weeks? I'm no dietician, but I suspect it doesn't take the long to get out of your system. Regardless, I wouldn't cut out either. Not six weeks. Not six days. Not six hours. Maybe six minutes before the gun, but that's about it.
First, try to relax your feet. I know easier said than done.
A banana and a gel of your choice 20 minutes before your swim should help, potassium, sodium and electrolytes. Take along a bottle of gatorade also.
Muscle cramping is usually the result to low electrolytes. Try taking some in pre or during swim.

Magnesium is just as important as potassium and is yet rarely mentioned and often neglected.
Have you tried stretching your feet before jumping in? The old stand-on-a-tennis-ball trick works wonders.

all good advice, thanks guys !
I haven't really ever been concerned with the vitamins I should be taking, that could definitely help.
and stretching is just a no brainer......I'll probably try that one first, don't know why I didn't try that right off the bat ;)

When they happen I massage them out with my thumbs/knuckles and try to stretch them out. To prevent them, I would work on stretching out your arches, massaging them out with a tennis ball or plantar fasciitis massage ball. And then, when you are working out, let your feet relax and stretch out between sets.
I've had them too, usually when I swim the day after a long run or heavy walking. Pushing off the walls with authority seems to be a big trigger, so I try not to put my toes into that too much... easier said than done! Let us know what works, as I would love to get it licked for good.

I get it too in one foot usually, the arch really cramps up, but I thought it was due to a bandy foot really rather than any lack.........a banana before a swim might do the trick
Dreams are the stars which charter the course of our lives. Happy the one who follows their dreams
i got them when i returned to swimming after some time off, but they went away on their own...i think i was all tense and i began to relax a bit in the water
sorry, not much help :)

I was born in the water, it is my best and favorite leg of the triathlon, and I always relish the ONLY chance I get to look good in a tri by coming out of the water early. However I have a simple, stupid, and debilitating issue while swimming. I can't relax my feet, I keep them pointed (even though I am not kicking) which leads to severe cramps in my arches.
Has anyone else out there had to deal with this issue and over come it?
I have never dealt with cramps before, and I am not sure what to do to fix them.
A friend of mine told me I needed potassium........I thought I would ask you guys before I show up to my lane with some bananas.
thanks,
-N
