IM in 8 weeks -- Can it be done?
Yes. You can do it. You get 17 hours. 2.5 hours to swim, 8 hours to bike, 6.5 hours to run/walk the marathon.
Hard days hard, easy days easy.
I haven't done an IM yet, but I would say go for it, with an open mind. They're not going to refund your money, so why not go and be a part of the event? Train and do the best you can. The worst-case scenario is, you don't finish under the time cutoff, or you have to bail out in the middle. But even if that happens, you have gained the experience of being at an IM, doing the swim start, being on the course, etc., which will really help you when you sign up to do another one (hopefully with better health/luck during training). Just go and experience it and enjoy it and pick up any wisdom you can from being on the scene. And if you do finish under the cutoff, then WAHOO!!! to you, it would be such a rush.
This is from someone who did her first 50k run on almost no training--I gave birth to my son about 4 months before it, so my only training was a daily 3-mile stroller-pushing run and a few 10-milers. I walked a lot of it, ran most of the second half, and was not even the last finisher--and I had a wonderful time and went on to do others, also wonderful, with more training.
I think you can do it. Being in a similar situation my advice is to be careful over the next few weeks. Don't try to prove too much to yourself over the next few weeks or you risk injury that can really reduce your chances. Don't up your long run distance too much, that could be the easiest way to cause injury.
Follow Sooner's time lines and hang on the beach in Cozumel afterward! Give us a good race report as I am looking at that IM for 2011 as a possibility. Good luck with the next 6-8weeks!
If you just want to finish, I think you could probably do it if you focus your workouts and get some quality planning help from someone who knows what they are doing.
No matter how good you feel on the swim and bike, take it easy. Who knows? You might get off the bike and still feel good. Then you end up running the marathon, or most of it, and surprise yourself. Even if you don't make it, you just got to hang out and train on Cozumel.

So.. what? You were just going to cancel the trip?
It's COZUMEL!! ..in freakin' NOVEMBER!!
Of course you're going. Cruise the swim - in warm, tropical, super-floaty salt water.
Enjoy the bike. It's flat and smooth new pavement. I know. I rode it.
Have a nice jog / walk. Enjoy the native music along the course - steel drums, reggae, hip-hop all the way through the dark (sun sets at 6pm).
Get the t-shirt, the medal.
Brag to all your friends for the rest of your life!
I just never get why people even ask about whether or not they "should do" an Ironman.
and just remember..
it's in COZUMEL, in NOVEMBER!!!
:)
enjoy,
PoC
ps. need a sherpa?
I'm cheap, and don't eat much.

I am signed up for IM Cozumel. I was training fairly consistently up through the beginning of September, but then got sick and had to take it easy for four weeks (2 to 3 days of light training). I completed a 1/2 IM in August and have done a 90 mile ride, both felt a bit slow, but otherwise good. I am up to running 12 miles. I can swim for a long time, albeit slowly. I am fully recovered from my illness now, but I am wondering if I can get enough quality workouts in in the next 8 weeks (6, really, with tapering). This is my first IM race. Any thoughts are appreciated.
